You deserve the punishment.
You had been discouraging Calvin right from the start and now you wouldn’t even help him with names of bugs.
It has all been your fault.
Go Calvin! you are the boy! you really know how to handle girls!
I don’t approve stealing -usually-, but Calvin, what can you do else to save yourself in this very moment? overall, you are already an atheist ( I think), no God punishment fear for you!
Good morning all! I don’t ever remember seeing it Mike Firesmith but, as they originally were a type of nickname tacked on to descibe the person such as John’s son or Smith, then Calvin’s should be Evil or Self-righteous. Look at that face of his in the last panel!
As a teacher, I have an observation to make: The teacher seldom catches the first offender or provocateur. Most of the times, s/he gets the one who answers back.
Exhibit A: Susie Derkins.
In other order of things, Bill Waterson never gave a last name to Calvin. As a matter of fact, he recognized he intentionally never gave a first name to Calvin´s dad or Calvin´s mom.
They will be forever “dad” or “mom”.
What was Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk) first name?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Liutenant. It never had a first name in the series.
Columbo’s first name was Frank. It was never spoken on the show, but his police ID card was shown many times with his signature clearly on it – “Frank Columbo”.
I’m sure a lot of us had a similar experience to Susie. I know I once had someone who always tried to get my help in class. Since he sat behind me I was the one getting caught when he talked. The teacher finally figured it out when she had me change seats - and it happened to the next kid too.
I always tried to avoid doing anything to get in trouble, but some teachers would punish the whole class for the actions of a few. I remember feeling a bit like Susie here, as I took it very personally that I was being punished for something I hadn’t done.
I remember the short show of Mrs. Columbo, but didn’t remember the name on the badge of Lt. Columbo. How I miss those shows.
There was this girl who would always managed to get my daughter in trouble at school by talking always upset her. The girl got away with it she spoke softly and teachers never heard her. My daughter was glad she finally had graduated from HS and never had that problem again.
Has anyone seen the new commercials on TV about school over crowding and no teacher. A young lady walks in wonders where the teacher is the students tell her they where let go and in comes the principle carrying two more new students in a crowded room asks if she is the new teacher she says no, he says you are now. That is very hard to view and what taxpayers and parents of children will be facing with the budget cuts.
A good thing Susie and Moe are not good friends .
A good thing Moes not trying to impress girls yet, you know like beat the tar out of Calvin to get Susies attention
I’m glad Calvin got his assignment done despite Susie’s indifference. It was as if she was purposely trying to keep him from getting it done all morning. Thwarting his efforts at every turn.
Send her to the Principal’s office for talking so much, and distracting poor little Calvin. Call her parents in for a meeting. Maybe she needs an appointment with the school social worker too, to learn how to be a lot friendlier to other children, especially to poor little Calvin.
He’s thinking up scientific names. I can’t stop laughing at every part of this one.
In other order of things, Bill Waterson never gave a last name to Calvin. As a matter of fact, he recognized he intentionally never gave a first name to Calvin´s dad or Calvin´s mom.
They will be forever “dad” or “mom”.
Which is why “Uncle Max” never came back–it was too awkward for him not to be able to call his brother and sister-in-law by name.
What was Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk) first name?
On a related note, what is Inspector Morse’s first name?
And, we all know that women (girls) are the root of all Eve-ill – making those poor guys do all kinds of things they would never think of doing if we didn’t make ‘em do it.
I just saw the movie “Babies” and it is amazing how over & over the older kid gets the baby crying or in trouble and the moms never get it & blame the baby.
Interesting thoughts today. Ok the lint is a Lintus dustus but on a more serious note Calvin could tell miss Wormwood to get out a microscope and check out his numerous North American House Dust Mites, Dermatophagoides farinae which technically aren’t insects but arachnids (8 legs) but could fall into the general catch-all phrase “bug”. They should be all over that Lintus dustus. Good night all!
How can anybody in his or her right mind fault Suzie for not trying to help Calvin???????????????????????????
Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That particular Titanic was sunk not in the mid-Atlantic, but before it left the dock. There was simply no repairing the situation by the time Calvin got to the bus stop, and trying to help him do so then or afterwards would be the height of foolishness. And Calvin would learn nothing from it.
As for Suzie being caught out for something she didn’t do: I’ve been there as a kid. When I did do something wrong I was humiliated. But that was nothing compared to being falsely accused and then not believed despite all my hard work at building a reputation for honesty. I know exactly how Suzie feels.
Mrs. Wormwood really hasn’t a clue at this point; she should give Suzie, not Calvin, every benefit of the doubt., given her long history with both of them. That kind of snap judgment against Suzie, without even being sure of what was going on, is inexcusable IRL and even as a substitute teacher I didn’t do that sort of thing.
And before anyone tells me to calm down because “after all, this is just a comic strip”… well, yes, and I can appreciate that, but it’s the real-life attitudes it brings out in some of its readers that really has me scratching my head. Common sense evidently is even less common than it used to be.
We used to get, “If I hear one more word from you two back there I’m going to have to separate you two!” My best friend used to say, “Ow, wow, you’ve really got us shaking now!”
He was and will always be my hero!
