Actually, I believe Dad is shooting good old Kodacolor: snapshot film of the 70’s. Calvin’s colors are a color negative palette complete with orange mask. we old fart photographers are good for something! Kinda.
If Dad really is using the more expensive Kodachrome slide film he is being a total fool because he should know by now that he is never going to be getting a good enough shot to make slides from. Snapshots, he just might get lucky enough to pull off, except that Calvin has to be unaware of the picture taking activity.

That’s one of my favorite songs! I’ll be singing it all day now!
I always feel sorry for the photographer’s at the “Sears Portrait’s Studio” in the mall. They have to deal with that kind of thing all day!
This happened in the old days before digital cameras. May be the only part of the reruns that are dated. But still funny. How about a write-once-only memory chip in the camera?
I agree Frankr. Because I believe you are refering to the Negative effect here and not about shutter speed, blurring, light, etc. But how about a photon or so many bytes of memory.
I agree with mikislate. I have always wondered if we could get Watterson to skip forward and see how calvin handles puberty and his teen years. He would be great in high school I would bet?
Dino you mentioned photo studios at Sears, you should also mentioned portrait photo’s for business takes pictures at all schools. Having to take pictures of thousands of faces all the time. Kids all restless. Now adays kids don’t dress up for pictures.
My own mom at 85 doesn’t like her picture taken but my brother-in-law is full of it and more she hollers and protests makes him happier and gives her a hard time and takes her picture when she leasts expects it.
Come on if you had grandchildren or great grandkids you dont get good shots if they know your coming.
You got to catch them by surprise for the real good pics.
Just for the fun of it, I took this strip and used the Negative Image feature of Paint Shop Pro 7 (I have 10X, but I’m still used to the legacy program) on it.
Unless some standard or definition is being used that the program doesn’t, Calvin and his context are not in fact in opposite colors from what they should be.
Bear in mind, my knowledge of photography and of color theory are both entirely rule-of-thumb.
@jrcarter53 NO! That would totally ruin at least my vision of Calvin and Hobbes. If Calvin grew up like in For Better or For Worse, then it would be as bad a strip as FBorFW.
He might even mature…enough to stand still! Which makes this strip hilarious.
I have loved Calvin and Hobbes since I was about 12 (I am 25) and I prefer film to digital photography!! But unfortunately my film camera broke and can’t get another one :(
I followed the link from about 10 comments up (a 1993 Sunday cartoon about color photography) and it makes me realize how outrageous Dad can be. Calvin gets his imagination and freaky sense of humor legitimately!
But this color-negative view of the world (especially as a convenient escape from having to pose) is a hoot. If it really were Kodachrome (slides) instead of Kodacolor (negatives), however, the colors would stay true instead of being reversed.
Digital cameras can do some wild things without having to reverse color, though. Just “grayscale,” judiciously applied, could produce some pretty thought-provoking results … if the imagination is operative, at least.

Imagine what Calvin would do with digital shots. His world would somehow pixilate.
Hope he’s not using Kodachrome. The last processor in the world shut down a while back.
