Little Sister not much on cartoons now adays. I can feel for Calvin’s excitement though for Saturdays.
Do you remember show called Thats so Raven? I remember the actress who is Raven Somone not sure if how she spells her name as a little girl from Bill Cosby show. Then the young man who protrayed her brother on the show branched off with his TV dad to his own show. Well that young 18 year old is on Dancing with The Stars and having a ball.
Test pattern was there to make sure that I hadn’t missed the best part of Saturday morning TV - The F86 Saber Jet Aerobatic display that ran at the start of the station day.
And the rules maintained for Saturday mornings in our house by my younger sister and myself were that TV volume was minimal and we made as little noise as possible.
Mom and Dad’s bedroom was on the otherside of the plasterboard wall.
We both were supposed to be still in bed sleeping and not up running around unsupervised.
We both knew that if we were caught the the TV would be turned off and we would be sent back to bed. Plus our parents would be up thinking of things that we kids should be doing “to help around the house”.
I too was up with the test pattern. My parents were cool about it. I eventually got a 13” B&W for my bedroom. Like Calvin I was an only child and had two imaginary friends. But Calvin is more bombastic than I was. My imagination was working okay, I just remained more under the radar. You get away with more that way.
In part “The F86 Saber Jet Aerobatic display that ran at the start of the station day.
Brings back the memory of the station signing off when a jet was shown flying and the poem was read… In part “And I reached out and touched the face of God”
Before cartoons there was Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, The Cisco Kid, Annie Oakley, and for the Canadians among us - Sgt Preston of the Yukon.
All the world’s problems solved one half hour at a time.
Perhaps explaining a life long preference for action adventure movies.
My Saturday mornings were spent listening to the radio. We didn’t get a TV till I was about 18, and even then it was so snowy at times it was almost useless.
God I remember waiting for the test pattern to give way to Cartoons on Saturday! Time IS relative! I lived several lifetimes! Was that around 6:30 or 7 am? I remember it was dark and cold on winters.
and…
Oh Boy! It’s Saturday!
I was never an early bird. Missed all the cartoons most of the time, but instead watched soaps in the afternoon when I got home from school until my mom showed up. I’ve been an avid tv watcher from I can’t remember. Cable, it makes it possible for you to survive….Calvin is sure one high maintenance kid, isn’t he?
Mom just sent over a 12 dvd set with all the old cartoons on it like woodey wood(holemaker), secret squirrel, top cat, and mighty mouse, etc. It’s always fun to see those characters I remember from my childhood!
Tomorrow’s our family’s Halloween Party at the local YMCA! They have fun games, face painting, pumpkin decorating, cookie decorating, haunted house, popcorn and apple cider, and safe treats for the children to bring home!
I’ve been so busy and intermittently sick in college that I haven’t been able to enjoy Saturdays as much as I used to. Thank goodness for Mountain Dew and YouTube.
My Saturdays are usually spent up before 4am, on a big yellow bus for at least 1 hour, at a high school all day judging and working a debate tournament, then home on the bus, and maybe home by 6pm. How I wish cartoons were available!

If only Calvin were so anxious to get up during the week - but then I recall being the same way. In fact, I I don’t think I’ve changed much.

Why did Calvin’s first day of school begin on a Friday? Why didn’t they just wait and start it on Monday instead?
gofinsc about 14 years ago
Amazing how I was always late to work, but never to an early-morning golf game.
Raven’s pal may be having a ball, but he isn’t doing much real dancing. Get the hook! Gong him! Pull the trapdoor lever.
