Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for November 21, 2009
Transcript:
Danae: You mean I'm right about the geeky guy social networking mind control conspiracy? Jeffrey: Yeah... but it just started out as a prank... then it sorta grew into a game of global domination... now we don't know how to stop it. Danae: Oh, I see... so what you're saying is... Jeffrey: Sigh... Yes, I'm afraid so... Danae: The geek shall inherit the earth? Jeffrey: It's our curse... we'll go to any length to feed our pun addiction.

It’s all geek to me!

The geek shall inher– wow, deja vu.
You don’t think Wiley is getting his material from the folks that po-
I have *no* sympathy for so-called addicts, to puns or otherwise.
You see how easily it gets out of control. First a bad joke, then stealing bad jokes, the next thing, world domination. You see? You see??
They choose their so-called “incorrigible” behavior, they can quit any time they really want to. You’ll never catch *me* stooping that low, nor incorriging anyone who does.

Jon Sequitur - I think Wiley writes a week’s worth of strips well in advance. I really don’t think he got that joke about the geek inheriting the earth from someone’s post on the Non Sequitur page.
We are only seeing the strips in the time frame the syndicate allows - one day at a time.

Are you sure? Well … I was thinking it would depend on which geek we were talking about but … okay. If you say so.

If I were to be pun-i-shed For every horrid pun I shed I’d go and find a puny shed In which to hide my punnish ‘ead.
Not sure who wrote that (Ben Johnson?) - anyway, Jeffry better start looking for a shed.

I knew those punsters were up to no good! LOL But wait a minute, think about it, given the state of the world today, they’re welcome to it.

Yes, I read F&E every day. Wiley, this one is alittle lame.

I love it. Din’t see it coming. If I could, I’d say the geeks can have the Earth - I’m moving to another planet as far away from here as I can get.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge about the lead time in comics, but apparently some folks are still unaware.
All syndicated comics are done several weeks in advance. This series was done a month ago. It would be nice if we could do the comics on a more timely basis, like everything else in a newspaper, but editors want to have the comics long before publication.

A pun, being the lowest form of humor, is therefore the basis of all whit.

I share Jeffry’s addiction. Twenty panels isn’t so long to set up a pun. I pretty much quit telling the one about the boy-foot bear with teaks of Chan and the one about the four-loaf cleaver and all the others because I took the reactions too personally. But seeing this strip and its reactions gives me the courage to attack our one-liner culture again. Of course I don’t get invited to parties, so I’m not sure when I’ll do it.

I’m venturing a guess that Danae will come to the geeks rescue and become Empress Danae. Everyone can now rise.

My brother and my cousin are great punsters. It was like growing up in a pun competition. They were constantly trying to out-pun one another. (Still are) The rest of us learned how to react to that kind of humor - DON’T. Otherwise it just encourages them.

I love it. Best pun in years! Walked right into it too. Can’t believe Digital Frog hasn’t come up with a retort yet!
Love the puns people. Thanks for starting this Wiley. Great setup. Spok27 haven’t heard that one since the 70’s!

Puns are best delivered from the blind-side. First the laugh, then the groan. Pretty hard to take life very seriously after that… at least for the moment.
maurovic about 15 years ago
Wiley, you ARE the best! Keep on punning!
lfanterickson about 15 years ago
I saw the geek inheriting the earth pun coming and was enjoying the setup. I usually pun instinctively, and enjoy when others beat me to them, thus I love reading the comments as much as the comics most days. We punny people are, indeed, encouraged by groans, and know some think themselves too good for them, so we try to sneak them in under the radar. That makes the victory complete!

If geeks are addicted to puns, then that must mean the patron saint of geeks is Piers Anthony and his Xanth books are their gospels>

I guess I’m halfway to being a wit, then…

It’s not a really good pun until people start throwing things at you. That said, Wiley, you got that shaggy dog in under my radar. Congratulations.
pbarnrob about 15 years ago
Right up there in punistry with Piers Anthony is Robert Asprin and his MythAdventure series… And we must not forget Spider Robinson and the Callahan’s Place stories.

Jeeze, Joe, lighten up. No reason to get cross….Intelligent, well read people are the ones who use puns the most. They’re like mind candy. ….

geeks inheriting the earth, eh? i don’t know…after all, we have to be wary of them when they start pulling scams on certain ursoids…in other words… beware of geeks grifting bears!
nonsequitous about 15 years ago
Puns are best delivered from the blind-side. First the laugh, then the groan.
A truly horrible pun elicits a totally silent room, dropped jaws, and the victims’ faces going pale, the blood draining from them. Yessss…
I’ve even been known to pun unintentionally, being unaware of it until people start throwing things at me. “Ow! What!!” Sort of a bizarre form of Tourettes. Now that’s the sign of a sick mind.
If geeks are addicted to puns, then that must mean the patron saint of geeks is Piers Anthony
Who? Spider Robinson. “Middle lamb, you’ve had a dizzy Bey!” “Very funny, but off topic.” “The topic was clearly Zion’s friction.”
lindz.coop Premium Member about 15 years ago
Gak!! Isn’t the groan obligatory – even tho we really did find it funny?
TAZFAN about 15 years ago
Isaac Asimov wrote a short story in which the last line was:
“A niche in time saves Stein!” Isaac probably liked
Spider Robinson! ; - )
