I can remember filling up the Buick with $5 and having change, putting in $1 and driving around all evening, and yes I remember when a gallon cost less than yesterday’s price increase. This was timed perfectly with the jump in price yesterday.
My first car had a tank so small that when gas stations were giving away frebies for a $10.00 purchase, I couldn’t qualigy even if I was running on fumes. hese days, that car would cost almost $40.00 to fill.
Wasn’t that in the days when you could find stations like SOHIO, BORON, PURE,BONDED, FLEET-WING, ATLANTIC, SINCLAIR, AMERICAN, STANDARD…. wait a minute… those were all U.S. companies! Silly me, now we depend on BP, SHELL, & CITGO. That explains everything!
I can also recall Esso and Gulf. In high school I worked part time at a Sohio station at a time when we actually pumped the gas into the customer cars, checked oil and water, gave away free dishes, and actually THANKED them for coming in….
/“SOHIO, BORON, PURE,BONDED, FLEET-WING, ATLANTIC, SINCLAIR, AMERICAN, STANDARD”/Sinclair is still in business in the upper Plains and Wyoming. And here in Georgia I still see the occasional Pure sign.
My Dad would always buy gas at the Esso station and the price I remember was 32.9¢. There was a discount station that sold it for 29.9¢. I remember him telling me that was too cheap there must be something wrong with it.

I can remember when Texaco had Jack Benny in their commercials (http://j.mp/vFnTL), buying one gallon at a time.

It hurts a little bit less when you think about the fact that when gas was 35 cents minimum wage was about $1.25.

I remember, growing up in northwest Iowa, a gas war and the price was down to 17 cents per gallon! And full service, too!

Heck, in 1978 $1.25 could buy the current issues of Detective Comics, Spider-Man, Superman, Daredevil, and X-Men.
