I don’t think it’s selfish since they’re your things. What if you loan it out and need it later? You have to go buy another one or ask the person to give it back. Sometimes they fail to return it and even when you put your name on it (like a book) you may never see it again.
I have loan things to my bros and I have not got alot of them back except my lawn mower but now and than I will get it back it will be broken and then I have to get it repaired.
I’m a notorious book thief. Lend me a book and you will have to come to my house and physically remove it from my bookshelf. Somehow I’ve never had a late library book though. I guess librarians scare me.
I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop when Clyde figures out the rake he is trying to borrow from Earl is actually his rake that he loaned to Earl last year.
In her book “The Virtue of Selfishness” the writer Ayn Rand explained why the concept of selfishness has been misrepresented as evil throughout history. When presented as rational self-interest, under a system that protects individual rights, selfishness is actually a necessity of life and the foundation of the American ethic of the pursuit of happiness. So keep your good rake, Earl; it’s YOURS!
I lend to those I know I can trust to take care of it, and return in an acceptable condition. I do not loan to those who have proven to do otherwise. (Out of my 4 siblings, I will loan a car to 2 of them, and the other 2, I will not. This decision is based on their driving records.)

He’s not. He just takes care of his stuff.

Well, if they don’t return them or they return them broken, is it wrong to say no?

I’ve had bad experiences loaning things out. Just say no.

If they treated his stuff like their own stuff, he might not have a problem…unless they habitually mistreat their own stuff.

I know that I’m not the “giving” kind of guy, and I don’t think Earl is either. Wait til I pass on if you want my stuff.
