If I had a glass of milk that was rancid, would I drink it? No. If I heard something on the radio that was distastful, would I listen? No. If we had a politician who was inept, would I vote for him? No. If I read a comic strip that was poorly drawn, with ugly artwork, would I read it?
I guess most people don’t retain what Kilian and Locher write. It’s not the sort of stuff that sticks. But Kilian used Bonnie quite a few times. But you wouldn’t easily recognize her. Kilian “pressed” his “Thermal thumb” and changed her from an adult teacher in California to a little Girl back at home
And what was even more amazing is that he and Locher used that “THUMB” to change her AGE repeatedly between 1994 and 2005 when she was last seen. It caused a fan on the DT Yahoo board to “stop reading the strip” !!!
Just for the record she appeared in NINE stories. During these her starting Age was 16 (1994), changed to 7 (1998), back to 16 (2000) and went to University at about 18 (2004-2005).
Fist appearance Feets Diamond/Old Mumbles. Last seen J. Kindly Goodfellow (2005). – Ages above are approximations from artistic appearance.
Her brother Joe (renamed “Cool Dude”) appeared in those earlier tales, last seen in the Max Gorge story (2000) at Christmas. Sad thing is that those that defend Locher claim he (and “K”) wrote/write for a “kiddie audience”, but strange, you wouldn’t think so, aside from the above and TWO other tales, young characters (with which first time readers could “bond”) have appeared in only 11 out of 70 stories (15.7%) since Kilian teamed up with Locher in mid 1993.
It’s not a “posture” that promotes that objective. Seems like SAY one thing, DO another !
As she returns in this new adventure, perhaps she has become an adult Teacher again. It’s all really a case study in flagrant use of Artistic License.
But whatever the AGE. the changing “thumb” is there on the ready … if needed !
PS: The appearance poster “Newenglandate” recalls was a Collins/Fletcher story from 1979/80, THIRTY years ago (time flys). She was an ADULT Teacher in Wasington State and her boyfriend then was a Detective named Joe Sampson as her brother Joe was born. The story is available from - Spec Productions in D’T Magazine # 63.. Phone Andy Fieghery Dick Tracy Fan Club (719) 685-9086 (and for any other story ever printed).
I still read D.T. out of morbid curiosity. No matter how bad things get in the real world, D.T. will still be written, drawn, “composed”, just BE worse.
hoooorahhh! a new , exciting story opens!
THIS time , it will be well-written , with twists and excitiment…. and it will be well illustrated with human appearing appendages and poses…..yes, this time for sure!
yep!
here it comes……
Bonnie Braids: “Your stupid husband, Idiot! Get Teevo out the back door before he remembers where he lives. He just figured out how to shoot people and do card tricks, while telling card jokes.”
It was a late post, but once again “Araldite” easily takes the Diki I. T. T. Award for his swift, clever phrasing in response to the Mea Culpa on “perfection”,
“Now that we have something we can all agree on …etc”
I’ve mentioned Brozman’s “fly over” approach in the past to buildings and clumsy detail in his art on room furniture. We see it today in the “leaning” lamp (of Pisa?) beside Tess in today’s 3rd panel
Unless, as we suspect, Locher did some rough penciling and Jim just “inked” it over, “as is” !
What monkey see, monkey do !
As someone noted we have attractive art in so many strips, why can’t TMS demand it for Dick Tracy ?

OK, it’s been a very long time. Was Bonnie Braids Joe Palooka’s daughter?

Correct. If I had a glass of milk that was badly written, would I…..??? Not sure what I’d do with a terrible wreck. Maybe try to be of some help?

Tess on the phone? That means a new “story” is about to unfold. After a week of pointless strips with a last panel showing Tess on the phone.

Growing that flipper seems to have affected Tess’ hearing.
