I'm just a regular kid! Ancient One: Ha, ha. You are FAR from "regular." Ancient One: After enduring years of failure and humiliation, you will realize great powers. KNOCK KNOCK Father: Louis, we've got to talk about this C- in Math. Father: Mom tells me you didn't study. When will you apply yourself? What are you WAITING for? Louis: Nothing! Father: Well, get back to studying for this Science test, Louis. Louis: Okay! Doctor: Mr. Maltby, I've come to recruit you for my school for telekinetic prodegies. Louis: Me?!

Ah, the days of magical thinking. So much better (easier) than the work needed to really succeed. Superhero myths have such a strong attraction to a kid’s mind.

isn’t this the premise Harry Potter’s success is built on?

Maybe Louis will get lucky and get bitten by a radioactive spider, or find an alien “Dial H for Hero” dial, or…

What was that cartoon, She-Ra? Magic (superstition) is good, mechanical stuff (math?) is evil.

Louise is obviously not challenged enough by “regular” schoolwork (being so gifted and all.)

A psychic once told my Mom I’d make the front page of the papers; she didn’t say for what. Saving the world, or an axe murder?

It’s actually basically the same magical thinking that a kind of religious fanatic clings to: somebody more powerful than the forces that torment me loves and values me and will save me and make me into something great. Imaginary superheroes will never lose their allure. I suspect that it’s a much more widespread kind of thinking among so-called adults than most people realize.
