Looks like the Buick turned out to be another non sequitur. What point was Gil trying to make, that Hobart drives a company car? So what?

The new aluminum gavels used these days make more of a ‘ping’ sound than a ‘krak’.

P2: Either both gents are experiencing reoccuring exploding eyes or a “shocker.” P3: Slim Fast Fat Albert says, “Hey, hey, hey. Oh Snap!”

Classic example of school board members having no back ground in education.

@chiphilton Gil’s point was that the teachers pay their pensions with their own money. Hobart says, It’s the taxpayers’ money. Gil says, You work, you get paid. You bought the Buick with the money you earned, your company didn’t buy it.

Lureman, huskiecoach, & doublepaw: Read P1 again. It’s the “scool board meeting.” The school board met last week.

P2 – What’s going on here? Hobart’s right eye keeps exploding (3rd day in a row!)

P2 – Since we have not seen hide nor hair of Steve “Jani-King” Luhm in well over a year, at least he caught on at the Board of Education office . . . those floors look like ice.

P2 – Is that a metal detector behind Hobart? Is there really a need for a metal detector at the BOE meeting?

@bdiem: " teachers pay their pensions with their own money"??

EVERY penny a public employee gets comes from TAXPAYERS, yes even the teachers. So some of “their” money goes into their pensions, but the majority of that money comes out of the pockets of non-public workers.

GO WI, Go get’em Guv Walker!!!!!!!!

@bdiem: You must be right. The point was lost on me at the time — my dad used to have a company car, so I thought that’s what Gil was getting at. Might have been clearer if he had used “that suit you’re wearing” as an example. @leblumax: God forbid public employees should have good pensions and benefits. Most of us don’t anymore. My employer has dropped our pension plan and no longer will make 401K contributions. That makes me insanely jealous of teachers and the like. Not really, but that’s the sense I get from all these anti-public worker protests. Unsustainable pension plans should be addressed, but what’s the source of the fury?

@chiphilton The fury seems to come from both sides. The one side says that public sector employee benefits should be more in line with the private sector. The public sector employees do not want to give up what they feel they have earned through years of negotiation. Thing is, if the public at large is funding the public sector, then they have a right to say what they pay for, just like shareholders in a private organization. If there is a logical argument (i.e. benefits seem to be out of step with the rest of the market) and the government is going broke, then one has to acknowledge that those people might have a point and NOT just “hate teachers” like some have said (not you, but others).

Oh, I can understand people questioning teachers retiring at age 55, as a good friend of mine did. In the long run I don’t think the system can handle that, and probably teachers should have to work closer to a normal retirement age. But I hope it doesn’t get to the point where taxpayers want public employees to have it as rotten as they do. As I said, my employer has stopped funding our pension plan, is making 401K contributions for management only and cut off retirees’ supplemental health insurance despite saying it would pay at the time it bought out older employees to get them to retire early. The situation stinks, and I’m afraid some people take out their anger on people who have it better.

So many comments discussing the subject matter rather than the poorly drawn characters. I’ll take this change as a sign this subject is a good one. Plus, I’m sure the school district saved money by ending the baseball and softball seasons so abruptly.

Teachers are paying a larger share of their medical every year, and if they own a home in the district, actually pay part of their own salary through taxes.
