Oh is that where that saying came from! I always thought my Momma made it up!

Actually the idea of bathing every day is relatively recent. Even when plumbing became commonplace early in the 20th century, most people just had a “Saturday night bath”.

People didn’t bathe regularly, which meant that most everybody stank most all of the time, so as a “practical observation” a 3-day-old guest wouldn’t smell any worse than anybody else. – SO I’m thinking it was more of a point of etiquette than mere observation.

In the dictionary next to the word “Plagiarize” is a picture of Old Ben. His almanac had little original input and mostly stolen quotes without credit. Oh, that kite. An early attempt at curing male erectile dysfunction.

Franklin would soak in a tub (he had gouty arthritis) followed by an “air bath” (working nude) for another half hour. Of course this was after he was successful enough to afford it.
