Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for September 02, 2011
Transcript:
Pig: Hey. Neighbor Claire... how are things? Claire: Great. I'm doing just what I've always dreamed of my whole life. Pig: What's that? Claire: Spending all day driving my kids around in a mini-van. Pig: I sense sarcasm. Clair: Oh, well, gotta go. Noise: Wham.

Pig seems to be sensitive to the plight of the young mother. Well she was not able to slip the sarcasm by him.

I wonder if this is really Staci Pastis here in the strip?

Unusually perceptive of Pig in the case of this poor soccer mom. The curious thing is, most soccer moms seem to relish it (at least, most of the time)!

Pig can be lied to by a shinny thing. How does he detect sarcasm when it doesn’t even matter? Bacon butt almost went to his pen pal’s house, which had the same address as the croc’s house…

Here’s a clue - don’t want to drive kids around to healthy activities? Don’t have children. They are young people whose development for whom you’ll be responsible for 18 years. Not accessories.

I often wondered about this ‘Soccer Mom concept. Why aren’t they ’Football Moms’ as well? Every kid don’t play stupid soccer.

But.. but.. but her face…Are we positive that isn’t Pastis in drag, trying to avoid turning himself in to start his sentence in Leavenworth? (Go on, look at that neighbor and take away the hair. I dares ya.)

I can laugh at this, but then I don’t have kids. It probably wouldn’t be so funny if I did.

Seriously now, what happened to Melvin, the Croc with explosives strapped to him? Did he ever finish that puzzle or did the vest finish him?

When my husband was growing up in this town, he rode his bike everywhere. Now we must drive our children to their activities because it’s too dangerous to ride bicycles. There are too many cars on the road.

It’s a mistake of society to think that kid’s need to be enrolled in all kinds of organized activities that require practices and games and the like. If your kid wants to be on a team and you as a parent approve and you both have the time to accomodate it that’s fine. However, it’s bad parenting to overschedule your kids or to let extracurricular activities become the center of their life and yours. Give the kids the opportunity to play in an unstructured environment, be creative, make stuff up, use their imaginations…

Patience, people. Stephan will finish the croc plot. I think Stephan intersperses crocs strip with those featuring the other characters because, as he stated in an interview, he basically has two different audiences. If he does a week of Rat and Pig strips, crocs fans ask “where are the crocs?”, and if he does a week of crocs strips, then fans ask “where are Rat and Pig?”. So he’s trying to please everyone, but apparently not succeeding.

Could this be a sign that pig is evolving? Able to detect sarcasm is really a step up from his normal stupidity. I can only hope. Feel sorry for the mom, too. Too much truth in this.

Hmmm…Pig is smart enough to detect sarcasm??

This strip is funny for the same reason Married with Children is funny; Neighbor Claire is being (sort of) honest about the realities of family life, as opposed to being one of those “cultists” who wear a fake smile at all times. The latter group creeps me out.

For a soccer mom I say Hubba Hubba. Beats Olive Oyl any day. Ouch! She just hit me in the head with a can of spinach!
