Ripley's Believe It or Not by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for August 31, 2011
Transcript:
Broadcast rights to the first televised FIFA World Cup in 1954 were given away free. Bite 2010, those tournament rights sold for $2.4 billion! Believe it or not! Ferdinand Magellan wasn't the first person to circumnavigate the globe! He died along with more than 200 of his men in the attempt, while his second in command, Juan Sebastian Elcano, completed the journey. Bishinu Shrestha, a soldier from Pokhara, Nepal, was riding on a train on Sept. 2, 2010, when it was robbed by a gang of more than 3 dozen men. Armed with only his kukri knife and terribly outnumbered, he fought for his life and drove them off!

Magellan didn’t have ‘a ghost of a chance’ to make it all the way around the world.

Bravo to Bishnu Shrestha! It reminds me of the saying, ‘One man with God is a majority’!Jonathan and his armor-bearer did a similar thing in the first half of I Samuel 14.

Broadcast rights are way overrun. I’ll bet they were repeats.

Did Magellan die on his first or second attempt to circumnavigate the world? It’s unclear.

The first super bowl wasn’t that hot either. It wasn’t even called the “Super Bowl” – it was the “NFL-AFL Championship Game”. The players on the winning team got a bonus of $15,000, and no networks bid for the broadcast rights.

hemohlobin – v.: circumnavigating the world. First mentioned as the reply to the question, “Where is your husband, Mrs. Magellan?”

The Bishnu Shrestha soldier entry says he was using a Kukri knife, but the illustration shows him holding not a kukri knife but what looks like a meat cleaver. You folks need to do more research.

It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the amount of fight in the dog that counts.

The Chinese sailed around the globe in 1421 before Magellan.

Magellan did travel to East Asia, by traveling eastward some time before his attempt to circumnavigate the Earth. The location at which he was killed is, by longitude, further west than the furthest east he had reached in previous trips. So, if his whole life time is taken into account, he did circumnavigate the Earth.

Hey “Noodle Dick” it’s drawn in perspective and it’s clearly a kukri knife

Yes! He is a Gurkha and he sure kicked butt :)

Actually, there was a slave in Magellan’s fleet that had originally come from the Indies. So I think he would be a better candidate for the first to circumnavigate the globe, though he’d started a little sooner than the others in the expedition.

Once again Ripley’s doesn’t know what it’s saying. Magellan WAS the first to circumnavigate the world. He traveled east from Europe to the Phillipines some years before.
