Yes, I have no idea why a man whom Tracy has been Tracy’s partner, friend, and confidante for almost 80 years now wouldn’t throw the book at his star detective.
Only one prescription was in Tellum’s name. He must have done something naughty to get the other pills. Will this give Dick enough leverage to get him to talk about the dead men?
Chief Patton (Tracy’s partner before Sam Catchem, if anyone doesn’t already know this) and Tracy understand each other and the way politics works in big (and I guess also small) cities. Meanwhile, it is now clear that Tellum could be in serious do-do, so Tracy ought to able to get him to talk as the smarter alternative to doing real time.
Looking back at Sunday’s strip, Tracy was invited in by the manager. There is no such thing as a private office or private computer when you are the employee. Tracy observed a suspicious situation and took the guy in, just as a cop would with a drunk driver.
I think Tracy’s arrest was totally clean. He caught the guy with prescription drugs and no prescription. The chief is simply refusing to punish him for doing the right thing. It’s the politicians who should be blamed, not the cops.
RE. your comment:Blah, blah, blah, you hate cops, blah, blah. So, what civil rights were violated? Tellum was caught committing an illegal act. Tracy was going to be hung out to dry, why? All because a “famous” radio host’s boss knows the mayor. AGAIN, IF YOU HATE COP SO BAD WHY DO YOU READ THIS STRIP?
The storyline clearly shows that Tracy was invited in by the owners of the station so no illegal entry.. Aside from the fact that we the reader already knows that Telley is dirty, he is shown to be engaging in illegal drug use. Tracy had every reason to arrest him. If Tracy had been set out to dry it would have been because of political / corporate influence rather than from improper police action on his part.
Scuttlebutt99, I really take offense to your statements. Either you have spent enough time in the back seat of a police car to claim it as your second home or you would like to live in a country where they have no police to protect you. Like beautiful Mexico, for example. Move to Juarez, or Nuevo Laredo and you’d be in hog heaven, as the cartels are the police – and vise-versa. As for me, I chose our police.
Hmmm, a Talk show Host useing Illegally Obtained Narcotics. Now I don’t want to Rush to a conclusion, or go out on a *Lim*b *Baugh*t I seem to recall something like this happening before in real life, If ONLY I COULD REMEMBER, Hmmmm.
In the real world, things are seldom “black and white” – there are plenty of grey areas. But this is Dick Tracy – the whole point of the strip is that the cops are the good guys, and do their best to keep law and order. Even so, the writers are trying to have Tracy do his job within the rules, and, as has been pointed out already, Tracy was invited into the building and then saw evidence of a crime in plain sight. My only question is, perhaps justice would be better served if Tellum were placed in a hospital, under guard. Being in plain old lock-up, he might hurt himself without helping the police to get their questions answered. One more point – even in the real world, there are plenty of police officers in the USA that are good people trying to do a very difficult job to the best of their ability.
scuttlebutt99’s post was gone by the time I logged on here, but I remember his past posts, so I can guess what he might have said. As Flight Suit noted—it’s a COMIC STRIP! If you don’t enjoy it, don’t read it. I certainly didn’t agree with Gould’s politics when I read Dick Tracy in the ’60s, but I still enjoyed reading it. And I enjoy it more than ever with the new team and sharing thoughts on GoComics.
Hey, hey, hey! Guys, please remember this is just a comic strip – not real life. (Actually GET a life.) And why, just because a “bleeding heart liberal” may think a little differently about things than you, they should leave the country? Tsk, tsk, children…play nice.

Want to bet that the mayor is secretly pleased that Tellum was arrested for drug abuse?

scuttlebutt99 seems to be under the impression that Dick Tracy is real. Perhaps he will organize a demonstration to protest Tellum’s wrongful arrest.

The political pressure sounds like a good summation of why Rush Limbaugh was never arrested for his prescription abuse ring.

So what is Tellum guilty of? According to the dialog, possession of empty bottles.
