The surface story of Emmett Till is sad enough. Reading the “More here” link including the historical followup is testament to the fact that although our nation has made strides, under our veneer of civilization there is still the urge to separate others, reduce them, and keep them “in their place.” Anyone “different from us” must somehow be seen as “other,” as objects, not worthy of inclusion in “proper society.” As a result, we still see violence against women and children, discrimination against minority races, religions and sexual orientations, and growing jingoism and xenophobia all along the political spectrum.
