Mrs. Olsen: Are you going to be doing another great-literature Halloween costume? Caulfield: I certainly am. Mrs. Olsen: Are you going to give me a hint? Caulfield: Certainly not. Mrs. Olsen: Well, that was rude. Frazz: Almost frosty, one might say.

Hopefully not me. You know how terrible he’d look in a lime-green mini?!

This may be a stretch, but “I certainly am” is Atticus Finch’s reply to Scout’s question in “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Given Caulfield’s race and intellectual proclivities, it would be appropriate for him to go as Atticus on Halloween.

My Google search turned up “Orlando’s Revenge” by Barnet Phillips, wherein a certain Mister Frost is described thusly: “He is certainly not a curious man, and never asked any questions.” Too obscure for the answer here, I’m sure, but a fitting polar opposite to Caulfield’s character.

Seems to me that Caulfield is going as Frosty the Snowman.

Mrs. Olsen didn’t specify character, author, etc. Can Caulfield’s costume be Great-Literature related in ANY way? I mean, although I will always have a soft spot (in my brain) for the Stooges, Curly? Ehh, I think that would be stretching it, likewise Frosty the Snowman. VillemezBrown’s idea is probably too obscure, but deliciously so. And wouldn’t Robert be too obvious, and not relevant to the "certainly/certainly not comments? Ooh, I like this game…

Maybe the poet Robert Frost?

well, it was last year (mebbe more) that caulfield went as a Ham. Scout’s costume in TKaM. an Atticus costume wouldn’t suprise me.

I agree with dogncat, I like this a lot…and no, the clues don’t tell me anything…Mallet’s been doing this at Halloween for years now. What a great idea. And they aren’t easy to figure out…..Makes for great sport, and puts Mallet close to genius-hood…….

I’m thinking a Dickens character?

I wait all year for Halloween just for his costume comic strips! I don’t think we’re getting many hints this year. Usually they run for a week – unless I’m missing something in the other ones!
