Another action-packed adventure of Congress-Man worst-superhero-ever
Congress-man: What's this...a crack in the infrastructure dam? The city downstream is in peril! Lives are at stake!! Time to... ...Take action! Up, up, and form a committee!
I seeâŠthis is like the levees in New Orleans that millions WERE appropriated for by Congress, but it was diddled with by the Democrats in Louisiana, and allowed the old levees to fail. Is THAT what Wileyâs talking about? THAT Congress?
Just voting the bums out doesnât work. One, you have to convince all the low-IQ voters to vote appropriately. Two, you just get new bums in. Instead âŠ..
I think we need to change all the term limit and Congressional retirement laws to better address our deep-felt feelings about the job our congresspeople do. Instead of term limits or retirement per se, if a congressman is elected to 2 terms, rather than prohibit him running again, execute him. And no peaceful lethal injection; push him off the Washington Monument. This penalty does not apply for anyone serving only one term. Their âretirementâ is getting to live.
I bet congressmen would think twice about their âserviceâ to the country. AND itâd save a fortune on the congressional retirement scam.
Our heros actions are to do nothing and just impede the wheels of goverment. He might not get reelected, but he served his bosses well. He can live with the fact that the people he was sent to represent got nothing in return. Like always, there will be a line to fill his boots.
You want fast, decisive action? Then you want an all-powerful dictator..Read the Constitution: our entire system of government is set up, quite deliberately, to make it impossible to do anything quickly, or one-sidedly. The Founding Fathers knew only too well that an overwhelming consensus to Do Something Now means that there are minority interests, and opinions, that must be listened to and protected. They also knew the wisdom of âAct in haste, repent at leisure.â.An inability to respond quickly to a crisis is the price you pay for a government that is stable, prudent, and not ultimately tyrannical. Deal with it.
I hate to keep saying the same thing over and over, butâŠthe answer is getting money out of politics. If congresspeople arenât for sale to the highest bidder (like they are now), regardless of party, we can elect actual REPRESENTATIVES, which should mean representatives of the people (not the corporations). No political ads!! No clogging of the mail system with shiny brochures full of lies and distortions! Just honest debate and presentation of issues on public television and radio. It would work!
Gosh, today it took four comments before a right-wing looney lept in with a dose of unreality! I guess they slept in late today.(Do these pinballs take turns, or are they on a rotating shift basis?)Wiley, once again youâve nailed it. BTW â Does Congressman have a sidekick? I recommend Lethargy Lad.
Congress â or any part of government â is only as good as the people in it.If you vote in people who vow not to compromise, youâll always have a deadlocked Congress.Compromise and negotiation are essential to getting anything done.
Weâre supposed to have a republic and democracy; the current Congress is depriving us of both, in favor of plutocracy and corporate rule.(Mussolini had a name for the latter.)
What ever happened to communities working out their own problems? We ran the car into the ditch LONG ago when everyone expected the oligarchy in Washington, DC to handle everything for the entire country. I know that IT assumed that responsibility way back when, but it was never supposed to be that way.
What can one sayâŠAt the end of the dayâŠInaction is the keyâŠAnd always will beâŠTill special interests ruleâŠAnd the death of innocents though cruelâŠCause the masses to riseâŠAnd to Congressâ surpriseâŠShow we are better than themâŠWho like just so much phlegmâŠCause our throats to constrictâŠAnd with our hopefulness lickedâŠWe kick them out on their assâŠFor all things must passâŠLike beans from that dipâŠAnd now we can quipâŠThat all will be wellâŠAnd how we can tellâŠIs that laws will be passedâŠFor all and one and will lastâŠSo that freedom can beâŠNot just for you but for meâŠAnd we stand hand in handâŠIn a truly equal landâŠ
âAnd then, of course, as Heinlein went on to propose, those eligible to vote, and/or hold office, would be limited to such as passed tests in higher math â advanced calculus, if memory serves â while the âcommon manâ, who wasnât a math genius, would be expected to âfaithfully serveâ his âbettersâ? And this, of course, would be a âbetter worldâ? For whom?â
+++++
Monastic elections include all those in final commitment to the communityâbut even the Rule has a clause allowing only those members âwith the better judgmentâ to vote.
It didnât work out well.
The opinion of the whole is usually better than of any portion, although even better are the sort of âfuturesâ polls where people can vote with their wealth.

Remember 1776 (the play about the Declaration of Independence) where John Adams says:
One useless man is a Disgrace.
Two are called a Law Firm.
And three or more become a Congress.
