I was fortunate enough to meet legendary SF Bay Area Creature Features host Bob Wilkins while he was still alive. Also met his replacement, John Stanley, who’s still with us. Two of the best in the biz.
Dr. Meangreen is based on a real horror host, Dr. Gangrene, whose real name is Larry Underwood! Flight Suit, I met John Stanley this past summer at the Monster Bash convention in PA. Nice guy!
Good morning, everybody.Panel 1—“Hoo boy”. Is that a salute to Count Floyd, the host of SCTV’s “Monster Chiller Theater”? This story is getting really scary, kids.
My favorite was “Creature Feature” host Dr.Paul Bearer, here in Florida. His closing line was, “I’ll be lurking for you.” The puns were a mile-a-minute. One of his eyes was always looking the wrong way. He was magnificent!
John Zacherley is still alive! He was the only monster host I ever saw in the NYC area, and that was in the early 60s. He wore make-up like the original Phantom of the Opera, and appeared on WPIX in NYC. He was great!
You guys have got to check out American Scary http://www.americanscary.com/There is also a YouTube of the documentary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kph0aEnQnPoI was a grad student at Carnegie-Mellon in the 70s and remember Chilly Billy (on the trike)
Anyone who’s watched “Wild West Tech” knows this has happened, train robber Elmer McCurdy was brought to justice in a hale of lead, there were no next of kin to take the body so the undertaker put his body on display, you’d pass by and leave a nickle in his mouth. (yah right).Anyway his body was discoverd in a west coast fun house wraped up as a mummy..Who says you can’t learn anything from watching TV..\\//_
For all those who are enjoying real life guest Dr Gangrene, we will have another in February. From WWE, Jerry “the king” Lawler will assist Tracy on a case.
Having been away from the strip for quite awhile, I was pleasantly surprised to see it has been restored closer to the original conception of Tracy by Chester Gould! The art certainly has more depth and substance in the hands of Staton and Curtis.

I do believe that young man in the background (or maybe more like the middle-ground) of panel two is Mike Curtis in full costume.

So, Dr. Meangreen is telling us that that is Kadaver’s real face and not a mask? Eww…Oh, wait a minute, this is Dick Tracy. We’ve seen worse.
And if that’s Mike Curtis in the background, does that mean he’s also our corpse?

The background character depicted in panel two looks a lot like the “robot” from which Moonbeam ripped an arm.
