You aren’t that late, it happened back in 2006. What’s funny is that there really is a Sheraton St. Louis, I’ve stayed there.

Tiffany took the name when she entered the Miss Chamber of Commerce pageant. She claimed she could win as ‘Heidi Hanksnot’, but to do the crown justice she needed a “glitzier” name.

http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2006/03/22.What’s even funnier is that Luann and Bernice then suckered her into thinking Steven Speilberg was looking to cast her in his next film, then told her he’d cast Lucy Liu instead – this arc’s sort of a reprise of that one.

On a slightly more serious note, I guess we’ve all noticed that Luann (the character) is becoming a rather rare commodity on Luann (the strip). Formerly marginal characters are now jostling for centre-space. I don’t know if I’m wrong in saying that Luann, as a character, is more or less played out. She can’t really go further forward without entering adulthood, and that would pretty much leave the entire premise of this comic in the dust. Evans can’t have her graduating from school, moving away to college and so on; the strip is set in Pittsville and everyone must remain here, including Brad, which is why he isn’t going somewhere else for another position as a fireman. Not that I mind the marginal characters getting more attention, because I’ve always found people like Crystal or Knute more interesting than Luann or Brad; but Bernice and Delta are also doing the slow, steady vanishing act, aren’t they? I’m pretty sure Crystal’s now a more important character than Delta, and creeping up on Bernice.

About the strip, I think – from the total lack of motion on his part – that the guy IS struck speechless…that someone can have a name as ridiculous as that.

I really think you misinterpreted Greg’s statement. Greg regrets naming the comic “Luann” because of the properties of the name itself, not because it’s not “more encompassing” or inclusive of other characters. .Greg stated in an LA Times interview awhile back that he strongly identitfies with Luann, especially now that she’s in high school, not with the others in her universe..“The name “Luann” occurred to me as I was driving around town and spotted a truck from a construction company called “Louetto.” Something about that name had the right clunky sound I was wanting for my title character. But “Louetto” sounded a bit Italian and too masculine so I massaged it into Luann. “DeGroot” was picked from a phone book. As a name for an average, clumpy dumpy teen, Luann DeGroot is fine. As the name of a comic strip, “Luann” is too slippery, hard to spell, tricky to pronounce and remember. “Zits” would have been much better. Or even “DeGroot.” " [11/2/11].He wrote that when he runs a Brad/Toni arc the requests to see more of them spike, as well as requests for other characters, but having other characters share a larger part of the focus isn’t his purpose:.“…the strip IS called “Luann” – even though she may be (to some) the dullest title character in the comics.” [10/25/10]

Dude, I don’t know what’s blowing my mind more, your attitude that any opinions that aren’t 100% Evans-arsekissing or 100% loving the strip aren’t welcome here and, or that you hide behind “opinion” to do it. If you’re allowed to have an opinion like that, it’s more than a little ironic to say that others shoudn’t have the same right to theirs.

I’d far rather have clyde trolling around because when he used “of course, that’s just my opinion” you knew he was being a big fat phony.

Not everyone loves everything about anything, and they should be allowed to say that, and say why they don’t without being told to bugger off and go draw their own strip. There’s a good amount of criticism here from BillTheButcher, mojitobaby, “..” and even me. Not artist is perfect and we should be allowed to point out fhat the Emperor has no clothes on if we think that’s so.

You may feel this is the only way to be loyal to the strip and its creator, but from what I’ve read on his blog, Evans would definitely not agree.

I really miss Tiffany’s scheming. She was so out-and-out evil or entitled that it was mindboggling, but that was what was so fun about it, she never blinked. I revisited that bit where she video’d Luann in the locker room and then told her to turn over her A+ Moby Dick book report or it would go viral. I ask you guys, is there anything more perfectly vilanous than that blackmail scheme?

Now all she does is steam when she doesn’t get the lead or else go delusional to comfort herself. I miss Tiffany being in control of things!

Heck no, disagree with me all you like, I have no problem with that. What I don’t approve of is “we don’t like it, out it goes”. A lot of good things that don’t conform to the party line get tossed that way. Evans says he likes an open exchange of ideas, so do I.

There’s not a darn thing wrong with provocative criticism and having to defend your opinion if you disagree with someone makes you think about things. Most of the critiques I see here comes with some sort of decent reasoning attached. While one man’s “provocative” is another’s “inflammatory”, I think if you can back up your POV that’s not being inflammatory.

What is, is outright trolling, because there’s no validity in that, the posts are only there for shock value and the outrage they can generate. Comments that totally misrepresent the realities of the strip, deliberately lie about the facts, (even tho Evans has said what the facts are) – “Dirk was never abusive, he’s a good guy, it’s all in your minds” – that sort of stuff. That’s thrown out there for an obvious reason. It’s up to you to either flag it or ignore it.

“Disagreeable” – hmmm – that’s really subjective. There’s no “tone” on the net so sometimes it’s hard to tell whether someone’s being really factual or they’re flaming you. If no one’s calling me names, I’m assuming it’s the first.

BTW, I see now my comment could read as calling you a big fat phony – that was directed at clydefrog for that folksy “opinion” schtick he has, not at you. Hope you didn’t read it that way.
