I’ve read many a mystery where the Priest is never suspected. Kill that punster and I’ll throw a twenty in the plate.

As somebody once noted, a pun is the only kind of joke that gets groans instead of laughs…and the better/worse it is, the louder the groans. And incidentally, it’s also the only kind of joke that doesn’t involve cruelty and mocking someone else’s misfortune. There’s a lot of interesting food for thought there.

That is absolutely the worst pun I have heard in a long time! I’ll have to remember to use it myself! ;)

Scaaty I disagree that all other humor is based on cruelty and mocking someone else’s misfortune. Irony is also humorous.

Thanks for that RCMinor, I’ll look that up. I’m wondering now whether irony is a sudden incongruity. Of course, irony is not the kind of humor that evokes an immediate laughter response.

billtominson442, RCMinor: a good discussion..I would agree that all humor, including puns and irony, involves incongruity. But not all incongruity is funny. It’s easy enough to think of examples of incongruity and absurdity that aren’t funny or evoke laughter, or in fact much of anything..It seems to me that, to be humorous, a situation must include the hearer enjoying a feeling of superiority to the victim of the joke, and, at least on some level, mocking him for it. (Why that may get expressed as laughter is more complicated. Some primatology researchers theorize that laughter is an expression of anger and fear at a threatening situation, and relief that the threat isn’t aimed at oneself.) For exactly that reason, the butt of the joke may get angry not at the situation, but at those who are laughing..Man seems to be the only animal that appreciates a joke, much less a pun — but it can tell us more about ourselves than we want to know. (“Men show their characters in nothing more clearly than in what they think laughable.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

I love the long setups. Even when you see it coming, it still smacks you in the face at the end!

If you don’t like Frank & Ernest humor, reading it seems like PUNishment. My wife & I met and got to know each other over puns! We and our 4 children still love a good one and have many word plays.

There was a story—perhaps by Asimov—that noted that puns are distinct from other forms of humor, and postulated that the human race was a test-bed for humor, and once we discovered this fact, it would be replaced with something else. The story ends with the characters trying to remember a joke, any joke—and wondering what will replace humor.

Ironically, the organ at my church is being repaired this week. I’m gonna cut this out (print this out?) and leave it on the organ for the repairman to find!

Unfortunately, most pews aren’t used often enough to bother with fixing.
