Girl: No two snowflakes are alike. Lightning never strikes twice in the same place. And you're trying to tell me consistency is the key to success? Frazz: I don't see nature as a success so much as a work-in-progress.
The antenna (and lightning rod) atop the Sears (I refuse to call it “Willis”) Tower gets hit more than a hundred times a year. And the building still stands… proof that consistency IS the secret to success…
@nab: Glad to hear someone else say that the snowflake thing is a myth. If nothing else, considering how many snowflakes can be in one storm, even on a molecular level, it seems unlikely to me that the structure is always different. And besides, has anyone checked out all snowflakes?
Yeah, I’ve often wondered about that snow flake thing, In the history of the world there has been a lot of snow flakes..Some of them have to have been the same……
Lighting always strikes twice, literally every time. If you watch closely during a lighting storm you’ll see it is always either once up then once down or vice versa. And cloud to cloud lightning always strikes both ways. After a complete lightning strike it should normally take awhile before the static charge in that spot is inbalanced enough to allow another strike, but that isn’t a certainty either.
as nature is a work in progress so to is humanity! Success and life we need to keep growing and changing, to do otherwise is to be part of the “walking dead”!
A one mg snowflake would have something like 1013 water molecules. Do you know how many different ways there are to arrange 1013 of anything?Even if there are some constraints imposed by the shape od the molecule.

The scientific reason lightning never strikes twice in the same place is that the same place isn’t there the second time.

I think Frazz didn’t go far enough. Nature doesn’t seem to have goals in mind, at least with regard to snowflake variety and lightning location.

Playing the lottery consistently increases the odds of winning. And some winners have won lotteries consistently.

Playing the lottery many times guarentees that unless you win, the money you spent on it is money that you can’t spend on anything else :)
