Sounds spot on to me. In seven years of substitute teaching, I have seen a unique panorama of school policy and culture. Most schools are pretty sane, and given the same situation elsewhere, Zack might have gotten at most a stern reprimand. But there’s always the hypervigilant few that go overboard and get all the attention.
Honestly, almost every school administration has some hangups or obsessions that everyone just learns to live with. Like being the only school in the district that INSISTS on marking attendance with an L for late instead of T for tardy. It turns out someone got it into their head that “tardy” sounded too much like “retarded.” Or the elementary cafeteria that will soon be reduced to serving fortified nutrient paste because numerous parents demanded that each of their children’s different allergens be banned from the menu.
Gocomics.com is the place I go (Along with reading email) is where I escape from “Reality.” Kenny Chesney has a song on the country charts right now called “Reality” because because life’s not cracked up like it supposed to be. We need to escape the trouble that’s going on in this world, but even in the funny papers, it comes here. The Johns have a good point in this story. I even remember when the last lyrics to the “Flintstones” theme song was, “We’ll have a GAY OLD TIME!” I liked reading today’s “Broom Hilda” because it’s how I feel about what’s going on in this world. Man! I hate politcal correctness!
Considering that this is the only example given of excessive “political correctness”, it is an unfortunate choice. Children are continually being harassed, bullied, and tormented for being – or being perceived of as – gay. This is a very serious problem in schools across the country. Maybe some discussion of WHY this word is so charged?

It’s so adorable that the Johns think this could actually be a problem in the schools! So cute!
So divorced from reality, but so, so, so cute!

@kroy: Yes. There are about 100,000 schools in the US. You can find one or two in which stupid things happen every month.
