Silliness. And yes, my kids bring their lunches to school every day – have for years.

@cdward: Silliness. Yes, I agree. But also already here some places, and coming someday to a school near you. Read the papers or subscribe to Randy Cassingham’s “This is True” E-zine

Jeez-I wonder what they would have said to my bringing a can of Slim-Fast or Carnation Instant Breakfast as my lunch (hey I was a nerd and wanted more time to read instead of chew!)

This is one more sign of a massive change that’s comming. Not simply a cultural/generational change, but an epoch change, on the scale of the fall of Rome. Prepare to welcome the “Dark Ages”Reduce. (Really? Just because some autocrat snooped a toddler’s lunch?) D-mn straight baby. ;-)

they should worry more about what is being SOLD as a proper lunch like “breaded cheese sticks” and chicken nuggets, etc etc…

How did we get here? We are a nation of boiling frogs. Can’t boil a frog in hot water or they’ll jump out. You place them in cold water then slower turn up the heat so they don’t notice. By the time they do it’s too late — they can’t move because their leg muscles are too relaxed and used to the comfort of the government taking care of them!

Since this is based on an actual incident reported in the news, I wonder if the folks who actually did this are reading this comic strip and beginning to realize how ridiculous they made themselves look.

The people in charge of this program would not find this comic ridiculous. They are so convinced of the urgency of their mission they will simply dismiss any criticism as inane commentary by the great unwashed. All is lost my friends; our democracy is in a shambles with no hope of recovery. I am a faithful reader of many of the Gocomics strips because they provide a gentle distraction from the serious and disturbing news of the day

you’re right, it’s not about food it’s about government controlling the lives of its citizens. What RIGHT does a school official have to inspect a child’s lunch?!

Gee Man saw your comment last night. Tell me please, WHAT RIGHT the State, the School District, the US Government has in dictating what a child brings in their packed lunches from home? AND FOR THE RECORD I spent a GOOD DEAL of time volunteering in my sons’ grade schools, IN THE CAFETERIA and we didn’t NEED the Guv’mint to tell us what a healthy meal was, and we DIDN’T inspect the children’s lunch bags who packed their lunches.

Is it based on a real incident? Yes.Should we be outraged and take real action to prevent it from happening elsewhere? YES!Does it mean there’s a vast conspiracy to take over everything in our lives? Come on….I’m an educator living in California, among all the kooky eating habits that contribute to the stereotype of uber health-consciousness (mostly false btw). In addition to colleagues, I have numerous friends and relatives who teach. All of them agree that this is absurd and would never happen at their schools without serious repercussions. Let alone the fact that teachers already have too much on their plates to check their kids’ lunches and the vast majority of school boards would be too busy laughing at the idea to even consider spending more money on actively monitoring lunches beyond just the requirement in pre-K (regular policing by security is already expensive enough). As for the actual incident, the state employee made some pretty bad mistakes. She misjudged a lunch that DID meet guidelines and then instead of supplementing the meal, she forced the child to replace it altogether. It’s perfectly appropriate to react harshly to her actions, but calling it evidence of a wholesale government takeover is going a bit too far.

…besides, as a fellow southpaw, shouldn’t his teacher give Zack special privileges and let the lunch pass?
