Surely they’ll see her point and begin paying her. After all, it’s hard to find scintillating material like she writes without picking up a free matchbook or stealing a 4th grader’s diary.
The old double standard rears its ugly head again. Musicians, ministers, writers, etc. should “do it for the love of it” and not expect a salary, although many benefit from their services. Yet just ask a typical 9 to 5-er to “do it for the love of it” and watch the howls of indignation.
Assuming Elly gets turned down regarding future payment for her work at the newspaper . . . whether she “quits” or gets “fired”, at least she won’t be any worse off in the money department than she is right now!

Love the identical smiles of the mother and toddler. So much of what makes this comic fun happens below table level!

Spoiler Alert
If I remember right, they not only turn down her request, but were thinking of asking her to write a second column.

You’ll always find work -if you’re willing to work cheap.

Ah the old more money or I walk tactic……most of the time that leads to the unemployment line.

I’m just writing for the love of it. I’m using the gift I was given for the Lord.
