Not at all sure on the normal “delivery method” for the drug, but I did figure out on my own after a few Huh?s that those were suposed to be pills in the trap bait.
Twenty-five years ago I did a two panel cartoon with the first showing a road sign that said “Reduced Speed Ahead”. The second was a stereotypical hippie with a roadside stand and the sign “Half Price Amphetamines”.
It took me a while, but yes, those are probably intended to represent the drug “speed”. After struggling to ‘get it’, all it got out of me was a sigh. Oh well, they can’t all be winners.
I usually hang about 5 mph below limits, but still I’ve seen activity on the highway that I’d like to have had a record of. We now have drive cams – already in use on locomotives and some semi I hear. Thanks to technology, one can record his driving economically. On sale, some of the mini cams now can be had for about $20. I bought a Vivitar at Big Lots and just set it on the dash for a trial run yesterday. Nothing exciting except for capturing a couple of wild turkeys running down a back road. Ran continously for 1-1/2 hours – the card is supposed to be good for four hours. Nothing exciting yesterday, but there have been times that I’df really liked to have had a video of incidents, and probably will again. (This is not an ad for anyone – these cams are available now by various companies and retailers – just not usually the big names.)
Johnnie Hart must have dabbled in the world of the “lighter” drugs in the 60’s. Because over the years I’ve seen several references to drugs in his comics. Like one of the first folks I thought for a moment that it was a bikini. But what it is is pile of pills. Capsules like the ‘bennies’ that truckers used to take all the time to get another couple of hundred miles under their belts.
Johnnie Hart also co-writes on Wizard of ID. Years ago the troops had found a few tons of pot. The King tells Rodney to burn it all. Rodney says they are burning it, “A half-ounce at a time”.

Before and after bikini on the trap spring? I can’t figure it out, but I wouldn’t slow down for it either.

It’s not a joke if you need to explain it and somebody’s got some ’splaining to do. Got me what the bait is…

I think it is an old play on the word “speed”. as in the drug speed. (so 60’s).

Zoomed it to 400% and it still looks like daughter/mother bikini tops to me. It’s enough to derail my one-track mind.

Okay, now I get it. The white ends of the capsules just looked like empty space at first with straps around them, but I see it’s a “speed” trap.

“Speed Kills” has a double meaning here.

What’re those things the trap is baited with meant to be?
Lisa Lou Premium Member over 12 years ago
If they’re pills, he’d have to eat ‘em on a plate with a fork and spoon. They’re huge.

I think (again if they’re pills) he’d have been better off just putting a bottle labeled “speed” on there, or something of that nature.

Those speed traps can be dangerous, especially for very large and speedy mice.

Giant trap, giant pills=lots of speed?

In the sixties when airlines passed crystal meth out to stewardesses as legal diet pills, they were actual pills not capsules.

Like posted above, I thought they were a paper of bikinis which made no sense but when I enlarged it, I could see there were pills.

Mastroianni and Hart are creative not explainers. Of course all of us from ‘back in the day’ know the red and whites are Speed.

I think it is supposed to be “speed” like the uppers of the 60’s. Ahhh . . . the good old days!

I like the idea.
