I got it.

I also got the fact that the Mayans simply end one really long cycle this December and start another. They worried that such “tween” times were ripe for disaster and collapse. But not the end of the world.

I am 46 and I remember Kukla, Fran and Ollie. I was exposed to all that kind of stuff by my older brother. I wanted to do everthing he did, the only difference is I can’t even draw stick people and I HATE science fiction, especially star trek. But I did love puppets like Kukla, Fran and Ollie. And we lived for Sesame street as children. And while sesame street was totally scripted, Kukla, Fran and Ollie was totally ad-libbed.

I too love the Flying Saucers in background, which explains where the Myans went. Lovely planet, once they defeated the Daleks of course.

Re the woman in the 3rd panel, she could be Fran. Fran was usually in the foreground while the other Kuklapolitans were in the background.It didn’t occur to me what influence they must have had on Jim Hensen.Don’t know if Justin intended reference to “Another fine mess you have gotten us into”, but it is there.
