John, hope Phil’s not secretly taping this. He could blackmail you for a bundle.

Interesting, albeit minor, change in the drawings from yesterday to today. Phil’s pipe yesterday was a full bent stemmed briar pipe and today it is a straight stemmed briar pipe. It is somewhat unlikely that Phil was carrying around two different pipes with him, and is more simply an incongruency in the day-to-day drawing. For me, Phil’s worry and concern are common for anyone who ends up marrying when a bit more mature. This is a common malady in academia (my home) where most of us marry a bit later.

If I remember right, Ellie helped John get through college and get his DDS degree. And then gave up her career to become mother to his children. And now this is the way he’s thinking? I’m a GUY and I’d kick his schwanz all the way around the block!

Any change is unsettling and scary, but I find it amusing that committing to be with someone you love is what scares some people the most.

He may have a spare at his sister’s house, gotten nervous on the subject of marriage, and bit through the stem of one of them.

When asked on the old “Newlywed” game show, “How long did you know you were going to marry your spouse?” The men responded with a lot less time than the women. Which might just prove the old saw, “Man chases woman, until she catches him!” The other side of this is that a woman marries for love and a man marries for sex. She wants a lifetime mate who will protect and provide for her. He wants a bedmate to provide progeny for him to ensure (ultimately) his continuation. Then something goes amok, and he begins to understand the importance of permanence and fidelity.Think about that! And this is ONLY a comics page? NOT!

Mightaswellbe…. I definetly agree with you that a pipe aficianado will have several (I have probably ~100 myself) and do rotate them. But what I meant more was that today’s comic seems to be the same time and moment as yesterday’s (within a half-hour or so, let’s say). Myself and most of the pipe smoking friends I know do not carry around two pipes with them when they go places. So, that is what my initial comment was about.

Hah! Mightaswellbe… I did not see your second comment before I replied. We are thinking alike. Sorry for the redundancy.

I doubt it was a shotgun wedding. Just young, in love, and didn’t want to wait. My daufhter said she and her finace had talked about everything. My husband later said to me, “everything that they know to talk about”. There’s always stuff we don’t know about. If we thought too much, no one would reproduce. But we do, thanks to “spring and a young man’s fancy”.

Elly’s career – she is now trying to get into journalism. That or some kind of writing is probably what she was studying and planning on. But life intervened.

Sitting down and thinking is what smoking(even more so with a pipe) is really what it is all about. Now, that so many don’t smoke(and are delegated to the alley to do so), it has become a lost art. Too bad – many creative people got their ideas this way.

There’s a whole lot more instability and financial insecurity in being a professional musician vs. being a dentist.

Plus it’s a lot easier to score one night stands if you’re a musician. Why buy a cow, and all that…

Over-thinking it will only get you into trouble, Phil! If you love Georgia and she loves you, then for the love of God, man, don’t let her get away! Just GO FOR IT!!!!!

I had plenty of time to think about it: I didn’t get married till I was 38. I regret some of the stuff I’ve put my wife through in that time; but I don’t regret marrying her. Actor Robert Vaughn was 42 before he married for the first time; that was in 1974 and he’s still married to the same woman.
