Verse #1, Part 2 A Place Called Shirttail Creek>>>>>>Then back I went to my goldless clime,…But the bug had bit and it was a matter of time.It was back to the mill and the daily grind…While a little yellow virus took root in my mind. But the first step was taken that chilly week…On the trail to a place called Shirttail Creek.>>>>>>…The “mill” was a stud mill. Except for one stretch when we made 4X4 redwood ties for a small gauge railroad, probably for a mine somewhere in South America. Other then that, we made 2X4s for construction.…I worked on the night shift. We made 15000 to 17000 plus every night. We cut slabs off the logs and cut them into 2X4, trimmed and stacked them for the day shift to plane smooth. Five of us did all the cutting and stacking there was the “burner man” (yes we had one of those huge cone shaped things you see in old mill pictures) and a millwright who kept thing running and sharpened the saw blades.…The saw was a band saw, but like no band saw you’ve ever seen. If you cut the saw blade in half, it would have been 20-25 feet long and about a foot wide. BIG saw. At one time, for a while, I worked as offbearer, which is the guy who has to catch those slabs amd guide them a few feet and let them fall onto the moving chains that carried them to where they were cut into 2X4s.>>>>>> …Well, that’s it for today. I’ll start on verse 2, next time. Now I’m going to watch “The Twilight Zone”.

Thanks for sharing, Slim. As always, it brings your history to that great movie screen in the sky………
We’re off to our local Farmer’s Market. Too early for any real produce. But, there are lots of plants to choose from.
They have a permanent Farmer’s Market in Raleigh……State run, and looks like 2 huge patios, and is open daily. Being a small town, ours is only here on Saturdays, and takes up 2 blocks of closed streets.
So, do any of you folks go to your Farmer’s Market?
An Armed Forces Day salute and Thank You to all our friends and family in the Services!
We have two farmer’s markets here, one on Thursday and one on Friday. I try to get there for the fresh strawberries, but I get so busy working that I forget.
Henderson has an “event plaza” downtown that is a big concreted area just outside of city hall. The farmer’s market is there, as well as almost anything else folks want to organize and use it for. There’s even a huge parking garage (nominally for city hall, courthouse, PD, etc.) that is right across the street.
Good Afternoon Everyone..Arye: Thanks for looking. .dkram: I hope you are correct and he is at conference. I am kind of surprised that he hasn’t mentioned it this year..Slim: Another great story! I like how you handled the pranksters It let them know real quick that you kept a cool head! :)
Farmer’s Market: I have been scanning the paper for when our’s will open for the summer. I was hoping it would be this Saturday. I try to be there within 30 minutes of the start, because some things run out quickly, It is held in the city park, is only open from 8-noon, and most of the produce is from the Amish farmers with Master Gardners providing a big block of produce. I wish it was bigger, but am happy that we have one at all.

Good morning, Vagabonds. David still has not responded to my email. I wish I could find the envelope with his address on it.
