So…. he ran away to prove to her once and for all that he’s his own man….

and he’ll show her by adamantly, stubbornly…. …. acquiescing? That’s so funny! And sweet.

HA! Yup. That’ll show her! He’ll do it because HE wants to, not because SHE wants him too! Sometimes a man’s gotta take a stand…..sounds like they;re married already…

one can be pushed into doing the right thing and feel resentful about it. like you are not doing it for yourself but for someone else’s agenda. look at panel 2! most people don’t like to be nagged or pressured even when it is for a good end. the danger here is what if Gene meets a sympathetic lovely co ed on campus.. Mary Lou should not assume she is his Only option for female companionship. Gene should in fact show up to the beach with a girl to give ML a reality check and avoid becoming hen pecked.

i wonder if the two involved parties are talking to each other at this point or relying on intermediaries for communication? that would be a bad sign. Good on for Gene for having the stones to leave on his own rather than being shown the door.

Finally, the actual subject is breached! And it’s an old argument.

Susan is right, he’s stubbornly doing what she wishes.

Like telling a teenager to take out the trash and having to listen to them say " no…..I’m not doing it" and “it’s my brother’s turn” all the while they’re taking it to the trash can and walking back.

May Lou doesn’t mind raising another child, but she wants him to mind her.

I’m with Paul Roese. Being pushed by another into doing what is essentially best for one’s self, can still leave one feeling controlled. I’m a Gemini, and if anyone treated me with the same behavior ML is, I would probably do what they hen-pecked me for, and at the same time, end the relationship. Geminis are generally independent creatures, and we don’t tolerate relationships in which we’re TOLD to do anything.
