Mary Lou: Want to walk down to the river? Maybe we could talk!
Gene: The river? Now?!
Mary Lou: Why not?
Gene: Are we actually going to do something spontaneous?!
Mary Lou: Maybe, Mr. Smarty Pants!
Iâve been wrong in my thinking. Thought Geneâs part of the story was on a lake or ocean. River is mentioned here, so appears the setting is not what I had imagined. I must have missed that strip that originally introduced where Gene was at.
nahâŚsheâs playing it cool. My bet is things are going to heat up by the riverâŚshe misses him as much as he missed herâŚfood, wine and a blanket spells nookie to meâŚ..as the saying goes " Itâs hotter than young love out there!"
RE: river/lake/ocean â I believe her parents (and the restaurant and the schooner) are at the ocean, but in this scene Iâm pretty sure theyâre at the farm. I donât know where the farm is, but Iâve always thought of it as more inland.
looks promising. maybe she did listen to Big Yellow Taxi a few times and heard âDonât it always seem to go that you donât know what you got till itâs gone.â and took the lyrics to heart and doesnât want to lose the good thing she has. Mary Lou also has to be aware that she would not be the only one hurt if she ended things with Gene. Meg would also be hurt by the fallout..
Seems that spontaneity is usually one-sided. Itâs spontaneous to Gene because he didnât know about it. Probably depends on the personality, but in our marriage, too, my spontaneous suggestions usually go over much better when Iâve thought them through ahead of time.
It struck me that Geneâs kind of pushing it with the, like, sarcasm, so soon after their big spat. Her mad face and âMr. Smarty Pantsâ show that she doesnât appreciate it.
As an actor/director, I have given considerable thought to the old saw that arms-crossed body language is an indication of rejection or self-protectiveness. In fact, people can cross their arms for any number of reasons, including a casual relaxation. The real trick of a skilled actor is to vary the position and the tension of the crossed arms to distinguish between feeling cold, feeling threatened, or just feeling casual.

âSpontaneityâ does not âjust happenâ. It has to be painfully pre-planned.

See, she does care for him as a partner, not as a puppet..The arms could be folded because sheâs a little cool or maybe even cold.

A âpre-put-together-picnicâ ensemble is not spontaneous. But once she relaxes those arms, maybe sheâll be willing to admit sheâs too intense.
