If I ever do have a family, I’m going to see about home-schooling them if it’s at all practical.
If any of my kids turn out to be just like I am, the zero-tolerance junk out there means that they’ll probably have a criminal record before they even get out of kindergarten.
That’s because, when I was young, my parents were smart enough to let me go ahead and do things that were “suspect” even for the 1980s / 1990s, like letting me play freely, letting me play video games, and reading to me whatever I asked them to read. Rather than turn into a heathen or hooligan, I wound up several grades ahead of my peers in multiple subjects because I got that critical early stimulation. Thus, I was bored throughout much of the time I was in school; it wasn’t until I hit high school that I started finding classes which held my interest.
Nowadays, though, “letting your kids play freely” is a good way to get CPS breathing down your neck, “reading to your kids” means you’re “brainwashing” them if you read them the “wrong” things, “letting them play video games” is a sure sign that they’ll turn into criminals, and “being bored in school” means they’re either in dire need of meds or someone who needs to be tazed.
Is this a suburban republican school district where they believe that big government should stay out of our lives but small government should micromanage our lives?

“Idiocracy” shows the flaw in that plan.
