I read quite a number of strips on this site, but I always save this one for last of all. It never fails to get at least a chuckle, and a great deal of the time a true belly laugh. I am then armed against the death, doom, and despair of life,
Thank you Bill Watterson, you were the best when this strip was new, and you STILL are the best!!
@demtrug – Curiosity and experimentation are what define us as human beings. I’d be worried about anybody who didn’t want to fry an egg on a hot surface on a hot day.
Body temp, 98.6F = 37.I have a ballpark idea of themetric system, But even after 17= years I still think‘how much is that in REAL measurements?’ Oldhabits die hard! Wonder if immigrants to US & UKfeel the same….
I think Bill Watterson is the best too. I can’t remember the year but was so sad when he retired. One reason I love this site is because I can still visit Calvin and Hobbes and Cathy.
I grew up in Iowa. About every summer some TV news team on a local channel would fry an egg on the sidewalk. In full sun, in the late afternoon, yes you can if the surface is right.

You better hope it’s hotter there, Calvin. But don’t forget the butter so it won’t stick.

Don’t forget the bacon!

And who puts the mess away from the sidewalk! Someone could fall and break a leg!
Veridian about 12 years ago
Perhaps because, at one Point, we were/are a six year old?
Sciatic about 12 years ago
its only after he realizes how messy it is that he decides to try it on the car

As a fellow despiser of idiomatry, I’d have tried the same experiment as Calvin.

I’ve had egg beaters. They’re somewhat lacking in flavor.

I see a mess of trouble in your future, Calvin. But if you’re going to do it, do it right (as others have suggested) and do it with bacon.

Another old saying proven wrong. Surely there’s someplace that’s hot enough to fry an egg on.
GrayPerson about 12 years ago
Physically we continue to age, mentally………………..not so much! Calvin is an exception!

I lived and worked in Death Valley for a number of years. Tourist would try this during the 125 degree summers. It never worked and left a big mess.
rentier about 12 years ago
I visited Dead Sea in July, 53° C, but I didn’t try frying eggs!

The car dash may as well explode

But just think: this particular six-year-old could grow up to be part of Mythbusters: The Next Generation.

Oh boy. I hope they clean the mess up, if the result is the same as the one on the sidewalk.
Popeyesforearm about 12 years ago
Mmmm, a little dash in the omelette is tasty!
ratlum about 12 years ago
O it is hotter on the car dash, but if you were my kid and did that, your bum would be so hot.Maybe you could sit on the side walk to cool off.

That’s right! 100°F is 38°C

I read this every day. I don’t ever want to grow up.

One of my teachers actually explained why you could’t really fry an egg on the sidewalk. We were all very disappointed.
calvinsfriend110 about 12 years ago
No, It’ll be hotter on Hobbes’ fur. (He bust be sweltering since it’s Summer.)
watmiwori about 12 years ago
One of the great things about reading: you can learn a lot from others’ mistakes. and it’s not nearlyso painful as learning from one’s own!
