Frazz by Jef Mallett for June 10, 2012
Transcript:
Boy: I need to start thinking about choosing a university! Mr. Spaetzle: What do you want to major in? Boy: What's that got to do with it? Mr. Spaetzle: Everything? Boy: I need to know whose football team is going to be good this fall. Mr. Spaetzle: I remember when fans stuck with the same team through thick and thin. Boy: You remember when the players came from somewhere sort of nearby; and played for four years; and you could see their faces. Mr. Spaetzle: I think my ego just got sacked. Frazz: I know. I could see your face.

Interesting factoid: the eight Ivy League universities do not grant athletic scholarships. This explains why they’re academic, rather than athletic, powerhouses.

Odd, they act like so many colleges play football. I thought there were only five teams – Georgia, Ga Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Florida. (Currently live near Raleigh CN where one September night two years ago, my wife warned me to be careful as the roads were icy – Duke was winning a football game and Hell had frozen over!)

i know if it were put to a vote Michigan State would probably be able to shut down it’s Medical School, Chemistry Dept, Agricultural College and all Humanities Depts if that would result in winning sports teams. after all compared to Sports what benefits come from studying Medicine, Agriculture and the rest? the hilarious thing is that while MSU is set up and funded by the people in the state to educate THEIR children usually half the kids with athletic “scholarships” (not really scholars!) are not from the state. curious, does anyone other than geeks, nerds and outcasts or the wealthy even go the Ivies or Division III schools?

The odd perspective in the last panel threw me off. I thought he shrank with his ego.

It wasn’t Oliver Wendell Holmes, at Harvard, it was Mark Hopkins, at Williams.
Back then, of course, academics and athletics were considered inseparable. Mens sana in corpore sano, you know.

@Paul Roese: I hate to break it to you, but in adult life, the “outcasts” are the ones who went to college just to watch football, and the “in crowd” are the ones who picked schools for their academics.

I remember when the purpose of universities was to provide a well grounded, eye opening, wide ranging, well explained, well documented, educational practical experience in past and current knowledge, even the controversial stuff. I am so old…..

bigpuma, ouch! OK, I know this is so wrong, probably politically incorrect, maybe even elitist, maybe even speciesish…(Got your attention now, eh? See? You’re as bad as I am….) but when the question arises about whether or not Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens lived at the same time, co-mingled and reproduced, maybe even played games together, I always think of linemen…..

bigpuma, after the first ten head butts, I don’t think they know either…maybe some buffalo?
