Do you realize that at least half of each group will say the other side is pronouncing it wrong and that they can’t speak proper English? Kinda like some folks from Mass pronouce Harvard as Havad (it’s that Boston accent).

Pig, you should really start a peace movement in Louisville. Some say “Loo-ee-ville,” others “Loo-a-ville,” still others “Loo-ville.” A few even say “Loo-is-ville.” They could sure use one of your peace marches.

if you think that is nutty, ask people how to say pen. some say pain, pin, pon, pun, pen, pan. or, how to say picture which become pitcher in some parts. and garage becomes grudge.

@ Nabuquduriuzhur, that reminds me of the New Yorker who asked a tourist where he was from. When the tourist replied, “Iowa,” the local replied frostily, “Well! Here in New York, we pronounce it ‘Ohio’!”

Why not just say “mom’s sister”?

While we’re at it, why do folks in Arkansas pronounce it “Ark’nsaw”? And don’t get started on pronunciations here in Texas…if you’ve never heard of Nacogdoches, you couldn’t possibly say it the way a local would.

I’m surprised that Goat, that fount of knowledge, did not point out the correct pronunciation, which is neither ANT nor AWNT, but AHNT! And that BTW, is the Bostonese prinunciation.

lol ! The transformation of Pig from panel 2 to panel 3 was remarkable. These cartoon characters . . . the way they can adopt an entire I.C.E. (“integrated clothing ensemble”) in seconds. Bugs Bunny used to do this trick.

There’s a town in Nebraska called Norfolk. Phonetically, it should be pronounced with an ‘l’. The original Norfolk in England was pronounced Norfohk. In Nebraska, it is pronounced NorFORK – no exceptions.

I pronounce it ‘ahnt’, but I have no idea what pronunciation that spelling suggests to an American.
