Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for August 17, 2012
Transcript:
Dad: See the jellyfish? They sometimes wash up on shore. Alice: Ooh! Petey: I think it's plastic. Petey: It says not to put this bag over your head in English, Spanish, German, French, Russian... Dad: Oh. Petey: And Japanese. Alice: Who knew jellyfish spoke so many languages?

Jelly fish are quite worldly.

Is that a plastic bag on your avatar’s head, margueritem?Did it come with insufficient warnings?
Templo S.U.D. over 12 years ago
Who knew Peter Otterloop, Jr. could figure out what those languages were?

Petey’s a lot more intelligent then his dad!

Poor dad, sure isn’t impressing the kids this trip.

A. Petey! Where’s all your protective anti-sun gear? Are that cap and tee-shirt all you’ve got now?!B. Alas, Peter! —But be proud that your children shall exceed your modest accomplishments (such as not being able to distinguish between a plastic bag and a jellyfish).

Maybe it’s in the bag.

I’ve been seeing those on plastic dust covering of suits (the so called “Sunday going to meeting clothes”) since mid-1960’s.

That is sad news, though I suppose it had to happen eventually, given the circumstances.

Man, that sucks. The tribute drawing by GALIFIANAKIS is beautiful, sad, melancholy and brilliant. Only 5 years with Cul-de-Sac but he put everything he had in to it. Gave me a sick feeling in my gut. The guy’s my age.

My heart is heavy as I, first, wish Mr. Thompson every possible good for the future. Second, I want to say plainly that I have come to love Cul de Sac and certainly regard it as among the very top strips of this era. When it ceases, I shall miss it and the Otterloop family and all their friends and acquaintances as if I had lost a family of my own. Richard, this strip has been so wonderful! Again, best wishes!

I just read the news. I’m sorry. I do hope that you get some relief. Thank you for all your CDS strips and for adding some joy to our lives.

So sad that a terrible disease is taking away something that brings so much joy to so many people. If you have any say, Mr. Thompson, please allow gocomics to run the strip again from the start. Reruns are better than no Cul de Sac at all.
Thank you for trying so hard to keep things going.

I have met Thompson on 2 occasions. In which both times he was very kind. He drew 3 original drawings for free for me (one of Alice, Dil and Petey) I was hoping to see him for a third this year at a convention he usually went to (was going to ask him to draw Mr. Danvers) but he couldnt make it (assumed it was health reasons). I am sad he is retiring and endingn the strip

I want to add my thanks for all the wonderful times we’ve had together, and hope that GoComics and Mr. Thompson will allow Cul de Sac to go into reruns. Parkinsons is a dreaful disease, and we are all sending you prayers and best wishes.

Cul de sac is one of my top 5 comic strips (might even be third facorite at least) and now there will be an empty void in my life (comic wise).

This is one of the last great newspaper strips and I’m crushed that he has to leave.

Hearing the news about the strip brought much sadness to my heart. I love this strip, and Richard is an A one guy.

I’m sorry to hear you’re leaving. Fabulous strip.

Sadness.

@mike48It boggles the mind why someone would comment on a strip they obviously do not like in such a crude way. If ya don’t like it, don’t come around. Parkinsons is a terrible disease. Most of us are pretty sad about it causing a talent such as Richard to cease production of a beloved strip. We will miss Richard and his delightful characters as well as his sense of humor.

Why do you bother to read it? And why make such a nasty remark? Didn’t your mother teach you ANYthing?
