Ahh, there you are, just ten or twelve minutes after you weren’t! Well, to repeat myself—Laughing on the outside, crying on the inside. Sort of. Actually, pretty glum-looking outside, too.

That’s true of me. I have chronic sinusitis. I have to take powerful painkillers at night just so I can wake up without a headache. Head pain gets more intense during changes of air pressure – and I live in UK! It could be worse, though. I could live in Nova Scotia!

I never “got” Gatsby in school. Too young, too Gatsby myself (on a ridiculously small scale), I guess. Went directly from Gatsby to “Is that all there is?”

Girls hairdo: I’ll have to have a look at Lolita again and see if Sue Lyons has a bow on top in that opening scene. She looked young enough to get away with that childish style and attract Humbert Humbert.

Dearest Teresa, you have hit the nail on the head. I see often the thought, “Be kind. Everyone you see is fighting a difficult battle.” There are more Richard Coreys out there than we could possibly imagine. Thank you for this reminder.

Fear and insecurity fuel this irrationality. Unfortunately, while not as overt, prejudice and racial bigotry is alive and well in the U.S. today. Aside from African Americans ( consider the vitriol directed at our President ) the latest targets for hate are Muslims and/or anyone resembling an Arab. To quote that memorable song title from South Pacific " YOU’VE GOT TO BE TAUGHT TO HATE "

So close. As I came upon the post titled Ornate, I thought I had finally earned my own post. Such disappointment I felt when it turned out to be about a building instead of me.

The Blog’s “The Modern Cartoonist” by Clowe is a judgmental pretentious piece. I enjoy the greats like Calvin and Hobbes along with the occasional low brows like Overboard. The use of Freudian terms like “castration anxiety” and “gender confusion” to attack lesser cartoonists who don’t put out masterpieces every time is distasteful.I do wish quality cartoons would be more prevalent in the US but this isn’t the way to make it happen.

I’ll keep that in mind. Are there other up-to-date bulletins I should become aware of?

Archaeologist’s have discovered early examples of cartoons in ancient Grecian and Roman ruins. Interestingly, some were pornographic in nature, others political and/or satiric. There has always been a fine line between graffiti and art. I wonder if cartoonists enjoyed a higher degree of respect back then ?

We should all take a lesson from the hippocratic oath: “…First, do no harm…”

Re the Blog – Daniel Clowes. I am not sure why I would want to read the rest of that self-absorbed essay.

It reminds me of the criticism of particular books by people who cannot create a successful book themselves, but they can dissect the works of others: turning art into little bits of component parts which do not do justice to the whole.

The essay on cartooning struck me in three different ways.1) It was a legitimate complaint that in the cartooning field, the apprentice is doing the journeyman’s job.2) It was pretentious and effete, criticizing everyone that did not live up to that particular artist’s standards.3) It was a reminder that I can’t draw worth hqiz, and give mad props to anyone who has the tenacity to get themselves published in one place or another.

re: hair bows. I’ve never heard of this. But, while vacationing in Hawaii I was told, flower on the right ear means you’re looking. Flower on the left ear means you’re taken. Flower on both ears means you’re taken and still looking.

Frog Blog: How to Save PaperIf the picture is intended as a display of irony (and I have no idea if that’s Teresa’s motive or not; she might have just liked the picture), speaking as an elementary school teacher, I’d like to point out that that bulletin board design actually is saving paper: the teacher declined to cover the background. You can see the bare cork. Keep in mind that most [public] elementary/middle/junior high schools don’t have the technology to display student work digitally.

at 55, pain is a reminder that I’m still alive! Yoga, I have found, helps with fibromyalgia because I ain’t tak’n no pills!
