Pansies are hardy, so might oculd give color into December (I, however, tend to plant them in February or March when the nursery has them two for one).
When my wife was a State Law Librarian, she would periodically visit the State Pen to train the inmates on how to use the law books in their library (they had a constitutional right to her services; this helped them limit their requests to services they actually needed). One of these visits was while we were both travelling to a conference, so I got a tour of the medium and maximum security sections while she was teaching.

A woman, and I try to be a lady. (Sometimes, unfortunately, I can be a witch.)
