@davidf42, August 24 & 25 the B-17 was doing the fly over. It was the “next” day (Aug. 31st) we seen a man outside the Barber Shop reading the newspaper. My theory might still be valid.
I’m really worried about Axel’s smoking habit. I don’t want him to get cancer and die. Besides it might encourage some of the readers to start smoking. Maybe he could switch to smoking a toothpick.
A special note for you Tracy fans. Mike Curtis, Joe Staton, Shelley Pleger, and Sgt. Jim Doherty will all be in Baltimore, Maryland attending the Baltimore Comic-Con. They will all be present to see if Dick Tracy wins another Harvey Award. This may be the only time you will get to see all of them together in one place! If you are at the con, be sure to stop by their booth, #521 in front of the Kids Love Comics 3000, and say hi.
Just a point of interest for me…Don’t Venus, Meliese (sp), Mrs. Flattop, etc. wonder where Tracy is at this point? You think they’d be keeping track of him and be curious as to his current whereabouts.
Shifty Axel might be justifiably suspicious, but his resident journalist, Scoop Scanlon, has (however inadvertently) provided Tracy’s with all the cover he needs for his reconnaissance mission. The only remaining point is, has Tracy found the safe observation post he seeks?
As for the different look to the strip. It is correct that the style of the art is changed for all of the Simmons Corners strips, to look more like Harold Gray’s Annie while the strips with the MCU still look like Tracy except for the Annie characters. There is also a difference in the text bubbles and size as well as their orientation in the strip.
Thank you Tarry for this info, it explains a lot about the homage to Gray in the Simmons Corners scenes, especially the word balloons, which I never noticed! The inks did change on 8/30 however, not when Tracy arrived weeks ago which is interesting :)
I’ve just hit upon an epiphany concerning ‘place Charlie and fly to vs. real time travel’ – maybe it’s both. Maybe the island is home to a disturbance in spacetime that leads to Simmons Corners in the past. Travelling through it isseamless – like stepping through a… Blue Window.
“if” Tracy has gone back to the past or “if” Simmon Corners has been brought to the future, Tracy’s front page interview would be appearing in a 1944 newspaper. Be interesting for Tracy to go the the state archieves of that state when he returns home and see if can read it from a microfilm of the 1944 papers of Simmon Corners. At least he should purchase a paper while there and bring it home. Be an interesting keepsake.
@avenger09@Neil Wick@tsull2121 @Nightshade09Subject: T-square in panel 3:I noticed that too, and, since we are now in the newspaper office, I thought right away that it is probably a T-square. This might be a bit of an anachronism for authentic 1944, I’m not sure. A small town paper in ‘44 would almost certainly not be producing pages with paste-up boards. They would be setting “hot type”, either by hand (for headlines and such) or by Lino-type. Maybe a staff artist would be using a T-square to design an ad or something. A small detail, to be sure.I wonder if Joe will show us the printing press. I hope so; that is something I would enjoy seeing – a modern artist’s take on an old newspaper press.

“Scoop” Scanlon says that Tracy is front page news! He’s certainly not keeping a low profile, anyway, but he’s doing a good job as the town cop.

Why does it look like an axe “Scoop’s” holding in his hands in panel 3? An axe for Axel perhaps? Would be poetic!

I thought the name sounded familiar. http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Scoop_Scanlon_(Earth-Two)
Scoop’s copyright status is “unclear” so Team Tracy must have figured they could use the character as is.
