OK, so here’s the thing…I was pretty darn young when the Brush strips were running. Anybody feel like filling me in about the similarities? (There’s probably a few others around that don’t know, either.)
Okay! This has brought me back to life here! The original Mr. Bribery, Matty Square, Ugly Christine storyline lasted so long and was wonderful,. But the Brush (aka Jockie Lyceum, a con artist convincing donors that he had hair growing out of his face so much that it obscured his features, due to radiation from atomic bomb fallout) was, in my opinion, Gould’s greatest of the 1960’s! It was set prior to the Moon Era, and featured Brush’s henchman Hendrix, 2 chimps who worked as office help so that humans didn’t have to be involved in the swindel, and poor hapless P.O.Smythe who did get involved in it only because he believed in the cause! Don’t know if tomorrow’s strip will be a simple mention of the story (or a somewhat longer re-cap), but either way, I love the shout-out to this great story! Thank You, Joe and Mike!
What is interesting about how the Brush story ties into the introduction of the Space Coupe.
.
The death of the Brush did not end the story. During the chase, Brush’s embezzled money, hidden in a laundry sack, blew off the laundry truck he had stolen during the chase. This led to a side story concerning Auntie (who hid the money in her barn loft) and her nephew John (a failing storekeeper who needed money badly), and an attempted murder.
.
As Tracy was booking Auntie and John, he was interrupted by a call from Diet Smith. The panel showing Smith calling Tracy was the reader’s first glimpse of the Space Coupe, shown behind Smith in the background.
It is now established that the Congressthing was murdered, and Tracy and Sam (and Lizz, and the rest of the MCU, and Chief Patton: the whole force insofar as informed) are focussed on Selfy as their prime suspect. The only problem is that he has either gone to ground successfully or flown the coop successfully. This has got to be frustrating for Tracy, which is probably what leads him to recall the similarities to the Brush case.
Canvass the snitches and issue a press release asking for the public’s help (but try to avoid any direct contact with Wendy Witchel). Narcisse should not be able to hide in Tracyville for very long; on the other hand, if he caught the first plane to Brazil or to some Pacific island nation, he may avoid capture and extradition for a long time indeed.
We await further developments. Maybe focus will shift to another sub-plot….
Hmm…since the election aspect of the subplot is now over, it seems that they could let Selfy lay low for a few months, and then bring him back in another story arc.

Ken in Ohio was saying that this reminded him of The Brush. Did you see today’s strip before saying that?
@firebrand1
I looks like no-one recorded the serial numbers of their donation (no big surprise).
It’s confirmed that Bellowthon died from poisoning. Now, they have reason to arrest Selfy for murder, if only they can find him.

They are not in the habit of making note of serial numbers on donated cash. No reason to.

The Brush continuity is included in the volume covering 1962–1962. He’s featured on the cover.

So the Brush is Selfy’s father?
