Sounds like GT’s requiem for the Duke. He’s already history, even to himself (“wants his life back”).

I pity the fool that thinks BP is going to fix the leak by themselves. When’s Duke going to dive down there and get it done?

I can still remember a time before the internet, blogs and constant, instant two-way communication of nearly everyone with nearly everyone else when my exposure to monomaniacal loonies and otherwise mentally unstable/angry people was pretty minimal.

Thank you, horse_manure, ANandy and others for remedying that deficiency.

To Potrzebie: Zonker is not related to Duke – Duke is an old family friend that he grew up calling “Uncle.” To Tudzax1: Thanks! I thought I’m the only one who remembers that!

I remember when I was politically aligned with GT. I guess some of us grow up. Of course a little thing called the draft made strange bedfellows of us all. Wonder what companies GT is invested in now. Inquiring minds— Don’t go starting rumors that he shorted his BP stock two months ago. You have no more proof of that than a GT comic. Inquiring minds?

Lewreader grew up and that is why he changed his political point of view. I guess that is why he can’t make a comment about someone else’s point of view without insulting the other side. GT is an artist. I don’t think he has a lot of business contacts necessarily.

Duke hasn’t had a life since he covered the Honolulu marathon on acid and ended up in the City of Refuge, channeling the great god Lono.

It isn’t called “growing up”. It is called laziness.

Back then, you were motivated enough to find out a little of what was going on and pondering it. Nowadays, you would rather spend 1000 hours watching reality tv shows than spend a second thinking or reading.

The draft to support an insane war was very bad … there are far far worse things happening today.

BRIAN Haven’t seen you in a while. Still spreading unsubstantiated lies I see. Better dust that picture of Jane Fonda, she’s getting as old as your dis proven 60s ideas. Why you still talking bout the bad the last administration did? Can you tell me any good the current one has done. I remember the Prez saying something about expanding off shore drilling about two weeks before the well he gave a safety award to exploded. Oh yeah, that was Bush’s fault, if you believe the current admin hasn’t done a thing. Ah but you say they have. The ship sunk under his watch. Deal with it. BRIAN at least you got a lot of lefty supporters here..

Okay. I give up. Misterwhite bemoans the draft for an insane war — which one did he have in mind? I’ve read (and lived) a lot of History – can’t seem to place the “sane” war / draft he is obliquely referencing.

    Lewreader,

You’re beginning to sound like one of those undereducated persons who have difficulty coming to the point. Do you really consider all of us on this forum “lefty” because we like to debate the political issues GT satirizes? Or are you frustrated by GT’s–and Obama’s–cerebral approach to our national mess? Does growing up mean losing patience with analysis and replacing it with mindless action?

“GT – he’s loyal to those who impose apartheid”

Really? First off, there is no apartheid in Gaza (well, none that Israel imposes… what Hamas and Fatah do to each other is their own business…). Israel has imposed a blockade to try to reduce the flow of weapons to terrorists who fire them at civilians.

Second, GT has often given Israel a black eye - he goes after anyone he can hit with a punchline…

If you don’t like his choices of topics, go start your own strip…

Just heard something interesting on the radio (Canadian program called As It Happens, where they interview all kinds of interesting people).

It seems that cleaning off the oil from birds doesn’t help them at all, because they die in about six days from the damage the oil has done to their internal organs.

However, the useful purpose that this serves is to give positive (dammit what’s the word I want?)… anyway, it provides great propaganda for BP and other companies that make a big deal of it. After all, you can talk about the number of birds you have saved if you count them only just after you have cleaned them.

I also read in the paper that the tuna spawn in the Gulf of Mexico; the adults can swim away, but the young are helpless for weeks, so they’re stuck there. As far as I can tell, this means no more tunafish sandwiches.

In fact, it’s time for supper; I think I’ll have a tunafish sandwich, and relish every bite.

Tune in next time I have some more uncheerful news.

@Potrzebie, Earl is Duke’s son. I think, but I don’t remember for sure, that Zonker is Duke’s nephew. Not sure what relationship Zipper has to Zonker and hence to Duke.

I think I may have seen some kind of chart at one time, or maybe it was just a drawing that contained (almost?) all the characters that Garry Trudeau had invented for Doonesbury. There’s an awful lot of them! I’ve been reading this strip almost from the beginning.

@gigistrom, I think you’re right - Zonker calls him Uncle Duke, but he’s really just a family friend.

Lately the comments seem to be, more and more, people attacking each other. And making really stupid remarks about each other. Like using illogical arguments. Or pointing out that you disagree with me, so you are wrong /stupid /crazy /etc.

You know what? It doesn’t make me mad!! IT’S JUST BORING!! I’M BORED!! WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO WILL MAKE INTERESTING COMMENTS??!!

Ok, now I feel better. At least I have expressed what I want, but I don’t expect to actually see any interesting, intelligent comments at all.

It does seem that things here have gone from intelligent disagreement and discussion to ATTACK! It’s hard to pinpoint just when this happened. I, for one, would like it to go back. I used to enjoy reading everyone’s comments, but not so much anymore.

That was when the Exxon Valdez spilled. The people who clean the wildlife today say that the conditions are different with the BP spill and current cleaning techniques have a higher rate of survival.

“Growing up” means stopping thinking and just listening to Rush et al.

    Craig Linder – Right On!!!!

RinaFarina – they did a story on NPR about the effectiveness of cleaning the birds and indicated that cleaned birds can live anywhere from a few hours to 20 years – depending on how much damage has been done by the oil. My question is how can they be sure these birds & animals won’t just end up back in the muck – no matter how far away they take them.
