You’re right. The world is increasingly a sad place, and there is nowhere to go for refuge. Not even the funny pages…

What makes you think that atheists are not or will not lend a hand? I served 26 years in the military. There ARE atheists in foxholes.

I’m kind of scratching my head after reading your post. Would you kindly explain how the events in France lend support for the idea of a loving, compassionate God. Wouldn’t these events make a powerful arguments for those atheists “out there” (whatever that means)?

Those called to defend France should be not only from this nation and regardless of religion or other baggage. American allies also are very important. We also don’t keep those who don’t believe in God from joining the military.

From the Book of Common Prayer: “Cure Thy children’s warring madness,” and for believers and nonbelievers alike, let us all hope and act in ways so that the better nature of our humanity may prevail.

Ironically, much of the financial support for these terrorist organizations come from countries that we consider allies — namely Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Turkey is busy fighting the Kurds — the only native group that has proven to be an effective fighting force against ISIS.

A few weeks ago, it was widely reported that in 50 years the mideast will be uninhabitable due to climate change. At last, peace in the middle east, since no one will be able to live there… Ironically, Al Gore was holding a 24 hour climate concert yesterday, which was suspended due to the events of attacks in Paris. Yes, these things all tie together.

I have noticed that Bill Maher keeps saying where are the Muslim moderates? In prison, I presume. He is right, we shouldn’t be always called upon to clean up their messes, but what can we do if they won’t stand up to the extremists themselves?

Since the beginning of Doonesbury, the strip has always been about discussing current events. Many cartoon strips don’t talk about current events. You should be able to find them easily. There are many strips ala Funky Winkerbean.

the terrorists are also calling on their version of god, so will your figment beat up on their figment? Oh yes, I forgot. The Christian version (at least in the “new testament”) is a peace loving turn the other cheek kind of god.Oh yes, and I will pit the 30s and 40s as being far far worse than today back when 5 million people were killed in German death camps, all in the name of the christian god and his speaker, the pope. Then on the other side of the world, on Dec 7 1941, the Japanese staged a surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet and destroyed a good part of it. Until that happened we were in a very sorry state militarily. Far far worse than today.Yep, from 1929 to 1945 we were in a position where we could have, as a country, been destroyed. Today is nothing compared to what we were like back in Dec 1941.The only things that make IS appear to be such bad asses is TV and the computer. Without those all you have is a small group of terrorists(maybe 25K)making trouble on the other side of the world. and creating problems in France. Which are nothing compared to what France suffered from Sept 1939 when Germany invaded.Today, IS takes advantage of TV and the Internet. Meanwhile, we Americans appear to have, for the most part, left our spines a few decades ago. someplace else. Now only about 1% of Americans care enough to join the military that keeps us safe. Except when we elect war mongers who invade countries who have done nothing to us so they can steal their natural resources.

All I can say about Paris is that the terrorists undoubtedly prayed to the same God to make them successful that people are praying to now for “peace”. So take that how you will….

There is no need for you to censor yourself. I get the feeling we have opposite political philosophies, but we have managed to cordial — even humorous (remember the bit about Obama going to Boys Town across the Mexican border) — exchanges. If people are so sensitive that their feelings get hurt easily, maybe they shouldn’t be here.Taking into account your age, you probably served our country bravely and proudly when it needed you the most. You have every right to post your remarks.
