If he’s smart enough to prepare that speech without knowing how to read, he’ll do very well after he learns,

I read of an executive who could not read!! Somehow he faked it for years!!

I’m old enough to remember when reading courses were standard in grade school.

Sure, but then when he applies for the job assembling IKEA furniture they’ll tell him he’s overqualified.

When I was learning to read way back when, I really don’t remember an of my classmates not being able to read. The method was Phonics, how letters and letter groups sounded. The actual learning was sounding out written words according to these rules, and so would know what the word was.

Now, what method of teaching replaced that system, with so many failures?

Got this far without learning how to read? What sport did he play??

I remember that thrill of anticipation! Although it was not as great as lining up to go outside for recess.

The problem isn’t the young people going to Walden. It’s Walden upper administration. But making fun of higher education and degrading young people is a time honored tradition.

By his senior year he may be able to write a grammatical sentence. Maybe that’s pushing it a bit.

Back in the “Sally, Dick and Jane” era, no one actually learned to read – just memorize words.
