Priorities. Never could figure out why/how some can consider beer a necessity. Yet I’ve known many people who would spend their last dime on it, or cigarettes, or booze, or some electronic gadget, instead of food or something for their kids, or saving for a rainy day, or their retirement.
When I was in college in the early 70s, my roomie and I decided that if we were ever down to our last $2, we would buy 40oz. bottle of beer (which was available back then), and a pack of cigarettes, which were under a dollar back then.

Euphemisms are periodically adjusted. As someone who was briefly “unhoused” for few months, I find it less than helpful.
