I don’t think all that much of the “Guys” you associate with. Too much of the “Guys” is rubbing off on you.

gmartin 997, I sure hope you were speaking of the most recent Depression, not the one during the 1920’s and 30’s. During that one, I never got an allowance at all. Best I could do was peddle our garden tomatos door to door, with almost no sales. Even then, the few sales were sympathy sales.

These comments are like the “yorkshire man” sketch in Monty Python. Sample quote: “We lived in a paper bag in the middle of the street and dad came home and killed us twice a day.”

I had four boys in hockey for years…it’s a ‘jock’ thing…as soon as they home, they whine at how hard they got hit…and the fact you won’t let them eat more than a dozen hotdogs…

Michael if you want to sound tough in front of the guys it’s,“Give me some money, bit…”

Wow, I really dislike the “old” strip. I don’t like Michael, I don’t like Ellie. Thank goodness she matured. I think I need to stop reading this so I don’t taint how I much I liked the last several years of the strip!

Wow, even with the “please” I can’t believe she let her children talk to her like that. It’s “may I please have” not “gimme!” And what’s up with the snap? I don’t care who is watching, that is not an appropriate way for anyone to ask for a favor, much less for a child to speak to his parents.

I agree! “Jock” attitude or not, I would never tolerate that. The answer to his question would have been “No. And it will always be no until you improve your attitude.”

Wow kid, how would a spanking in front of all “the guys” feel? Better? You sure deserve it, brat.

If my son had spoke to me like that, I would not have given him money for pop. He was disrespectful and should not be rewarded for it.

I’ve never heard the expression “bagged” for being tired, but it reminded me of a word for tired that my grandpa (who was born in 1899 and passed away in 1985) used. He’d say “I’m so fagged!” Funny how slang comes and goes. ;-)

You’d think Michael would want his buddies to see he respects his mother in public. Or is that not until he’s in his 30’s?

In the late 40’s, I received a “whole” nickel each Sundayand my girlfriend and I would go to this restaurant, sit atthe counter and order a bottle of Orange Crush – theywere dark brown then, remember? – and sip away feelinglike grownups :). When the owner saw us girls coming in, he’d take out the bottles right away. It was fun.

Micheal needs to learn, but who will teach him? After his second comment, she’s standing there with her mouth closed handing him money. I wonder how he managed to grow up to be the nice guy he was protrayed to be at the end. John must have been a lot better role model than we have been led to believe.

Yes, you must . . . because someone has to teach them some manners! Oh, and by the way, no you can’t have any money for pop until you learn not to be so disrespectful to your mother!

I am a depression baby. I never got a dollar allowance; by the time it would have gotten that high, I was earning my own income.

Why is she giving that little snot the money after that kind of ‘tude. She should have marched him out to the car, no pop, no friends, no TV for a week. Some kid’s parents….grrrr! No wonder the world’s heading for destruction. Parents let their kids get away with anything and give them no discipline.

My mom would have said " I don’t care who’s around, you say please because that is good manners, young man!!!" Of course, I would have never snapped my fingers like that at her.
