No, It’s not the design. That chair is like almost all the others – it is stable when it is fully extended pushed backwards and to fold easily when pulled forwards.
John slid forward as he sat down and (deservedly), got his comeuppance.
Exactly. People here are saying that John “had it coming,” apparently for being a constant buzz-kill for the kids with his nagging, but suppose he had said nothing and one or more of the kids had gotten hurt as a result? John was just doing what any responsible parent would do under the circumstances — although I do agree that he should have put the lawn mower away (unless the kids decided to get it out and plug it in!).
I remember this chair perfectly. It has to click loudly, when it is extended properly, to lock in. He just sat in it, without checking it if was locked in. We still have one. They are really compact and perfect for the beach..Karma works in mysterious ways. That’s the reply to the punch for today.

I remember electric lawn mowers from back in the late 60s / early 70s: do they still make them or have they become a thing of the past?

I think Snoopy got chomped by a lawn chair once. Lawn chairs can be vicious! ; )

Of course it is! If you swing that hose around, you’ll poke your eye out and you’ll DIE!
If you go fooling around with sticks, you’ll poke your eye out and you’ll DIE!
If you put somebody’s head under water, you’ll poke your eye out and you’ll DIE!
If you sit in a lawn chair and it collapses on you, you’ll poke your eye out and you’ll DIE!
Don’t you remember your mom and dad telling you that?

Are we assuming the kids lack the motor skills to plug in the lawnmower themselves?

Compare this strip with today’s “Pearls Before Swine”(Sorry, too hard to paste links on an Android tablet)

I know it’s a “family” strip, but I’m weirded out by John’s lack of nipples and belly button.
