First world problems. When you see two 12-year-old boys beating the crud out of two 8-year-old girls, I guess you have to do something. “Well, we were going to take you on a European vacation, but I suppose since you were bad, we will have to send you to that summer camp where all your other little friends are going. You will have to go swimming, canoeing, and hiking in the outdoors. So icky out in nature. That will teach you not to hit and kick each other in public where the neighbours can see you.”
My parents “let” me go to summer camp two years in a row. While I was gone they got a lot of things done around the house and in the garden. Looks like Ellie has the same thing in mind, but is being a little more honest about her motivations. :D
I liked “summer camp” (Boy Scout camp, for a week) so much I paid half my way there, when I was 12. I don’t think I could go a whole week without bathing, these days, though!
On the radio yesterday they announced two local schools were opening, and the rest would open next Wednesday. Two months of summer “break” – what a gyp!
Another idea could get them involved in Scouting, Elizabeth in Girl Scouts and Michael in Boy Scouts, respectively. Of course, both Boy and Girl Scouts also run their own summer camps for outdoor activities, such as canoeing and rifle range.
I remind my parents periodically that I will someday put them in the worst nursing home possible as payment for sending me to summer camp. One of the worst experiences of my life. The details are best saved for therapy sessions in the future.
Some kids absolutely love summer camp, and some hate it with a passion. For me, girl scout camp was wonderful. But then, so was spending a week by myself with my grandparents. Both gave me a chance to get away from my brothers for a while.

uh-oh… that sounds worse than two other words: “you’re” and “grounded”

In Japan and England, they have school on Saturday. Wonder how the kids would feel about that?
