Thirty inches or 30 centimetres? (Canada is metric after all.) In the meantime, maybe John should just take himself fishing and leave the kids with Elly if he doesn’t want to waste that much money.

Now, now, John. Didn’t YOU ever freak out the first time you caught a fish and it started fighting back and flopping around in the boat until it finally died?

Looks like a Northern pike,or jack fish as we like to say here in Manitoba.30 inches, not bad,not bad.Id never spend 80 bucks for a rod and reel for kids though,10$-20$ was enough to get my girls started at that age.

Why would you spend $80 on a fishing rod and reel?

Why in a bad mood? You spent time with your kids, they had a good time. Money isn’t everything either. I bet he spends more on himself on stupid things anyway. But yes $80.00is a lot for a starter rod, unless he paid that much for all three.

I remember my first fishing pole, a willow branch with fishing line tide to it along with hook and bobber. Started fishing when I was younger than Elizabeth. I didn’t get a real pole until I was six or seven.

Looks like Elizabeth is going to have a red hot bottom soon enough.

Jon’s in a bad mood because he’s doing what he usually does: thinking short term + ignoring any aspect that’s not about him. Just as most of us usually do.

Poor John, if he replaces the rod and reel, that is 80 buck less to spend on his model railroad !

John had the net ready over the side of the boat. He must have got spooked as well.

HHMMM… Seems to me that if you’re going to be so paranoid, tie one end of a good line to the pole (near the reel works) and tie the other end inside the boat.

And since I’m a boating safety instructor, seeing one adult with two kids on a boat, ALL should have PFDs on. US or Canada. 8^)

You can buy a child’s rod and reel for under $10 these days.

@GINNY: You left a question on this site a few days ago about where cohousing developments are located. There is a cohousing association that has a website at hpps:\\cohousing.org/. It has a directory that shows where existing developments are, and lists of people trying to get developments going. They are even having a conference soon. There are two cohousing developments that I know of, one is called SandRiver in Sante Fe, and the other is an intergenerational cohousing development near Sacramento called Fair Oak. Someone is trying to create one in Florida, the state where I live, and I am hoping it happens so I can move there…

I would talk about how this restaurant is a running joke where John always has some disaster when he goes fishing with his kids, but someone might misinterpret that to think I am mocking the elderly.

Ad a few years ago showed a girl about 7-9 y.o. looking dreamily over the stern of a boat, with the caption, “Take me fishing, for my wedding is sooner than you think.”
