You’re doomed, Michael. Doomed to be embarrassed.

So, Michael, ask him how long it would take that letter delivered to Martha’s neighborhood and wait there the day of delivery to retrieve it from her mailbox.

That Canadian mailman strikes me as being pretty smug with his answers to Michael.

Imagine her dad or Worst Martha catching him in the act.

Actually, not true – I mailed a letter once at a box and immediately realized I forgot to enclose something important into the envelope. I went into the post office, explained my problem, and the postlady immediately came out and opened the box & retrieved my letter – no questions asked. I did describe the letter, so she knew it was mine. I also recall she found two other letters in that box that had no stamps on them.

Do NOT go to Martha ahead of time to try to explain, wait for her reaction. Who knows you might get lucky. . . . and she’ll love it. You can always grovel later if she doesn’t. Might as well learn how to grovel when you are young, you are going to need the skill later in life.

Have to wait for it to come out the other end? Readers Digest (?) once had an article about a government agency that compensates those that have lost money in fires or other disasters, send them the ashes or other evidence for at least partial compensation. Said the messiest thing they ever dealt with was from a farmer that lost his wallet in the cattle feed trough!

In the US you can go to the PO and fill out a form to retrieve your letter, and when the carrier gets back they pull the letter out, as for dropping your Christmas cards off in your neighbors mailbox without the proper postage, as some commenters mention in the replies, that is a no-no, but you won’t get in serious trouble.

Yesterday we were all speculating as to whether or not the Canadian Post would allow him to retrieve the letter. I guess we got our answer.
