Oh, Elly. You socialize with Anne and Connie by themselves, almost never together. We had comic strips in the past that showed they did not get along. You can tell your story, but in the final panel, Elizabeth clearly does not believe you.

“Two’s company and three’s a crowd” only applies if you’re an introvert Liz.

When I was in second grade, my family had to move across town. I made new friends in the neighborhood & tried to keep in touch with my old friends. I had one party inviting both groups…but they didn’t get on at all. I did manage to keep one of my original friends all through school, but we definitely grew apart (she was into the whole ‘70s “stoner” thing and I was kind of an ultimate “goody-two-shoes”). However, when I’d sleep over at her house, she & I could talk easily.

My daughter had two friends that they always hung with. One daughter Jenni, Becky and Jill other daughter Kim, Lindsey and Ronda. It was the same with other members of my family. We always assumed that teenage girls came in groups of three

I still have the one I got brand new, in 1964, and schlepped all over the world for many, many years.

It still gets lots of use. Teenage granddaughter has borrowed it to use for school reports. She loves the idea of using an antique machine.

“Two’s company, three’s a crowd” is specific to romantic relationships and/or encounters. It does not apply to a tween friendship.

Plus Elly could have added:

“It’s ok for you, too, to have more than one close friend.”

I remember those days too. I had two very close friends by the end of the eighth grade, but someohow over the summer, and by the time we reached high school, one drifted away, and by the end of the tenth grade, we were in completely different crowds. The one friendship that lasted is still my very close friend 50+ years later…

Only when you’re with your boyfriend.
