If I’d have tried that, I’d have felt the heat on the seat of my britches and rightfully so! I wouldn’t have ever been that disrespectful. My brothers and I worked around the house and farm as needed and I’m glad we were raised that way.

Snow shoveling was done by the men in the house growing up. This left mom a chance to get rid of us for a while. Especially after we usually spent the night before the storm waxing up the snow shovels – at the kitchen table. As a reward when we were done, there was hot chocolate for all of us. Mom had the uncanny skill to know exactly when we were done.

I actually enjoy shoveling snow, unless it’s the warm, wet kind. Below 20° or so, the snow is nice and fluffy. If it’s not windy, you can even clear near the house with a leaf blower or broom. The snow seems to absorb sound, too, like the needles in a pine forest do. Crisp, quiet, fresh air, with the snow crunching under your boots, and some warm cocoa when you finish enjoying it – one of my favorite things!

Never happened at our house. We shoveled the walk AFTER we put the chains on the tires of our father’s car. Then cleared the walks of our elderly neighbors.

My niece once helped my dad shovel the snow. When she was three.
