It’s hard work thinking of those ghastly recipes she subjects them to. And juggling the finances to cover Roger’s…choices.

For me Roger could beat me, never understood the game, when I was a kid was explained and I never caught on.

It may be an unconscious one, but it is a common tactic to pick a time and/or place that is to your advantage. Like teenagers asking for the car keys when you’re fixing dinner. Like being on a road trip and deciding it’s your wife’s turn to drive as you’re winding through the mountains on unfamiliar dirt roads in the rain at dusk.

Back in the day, my friends and I would play chess far into the night. As it got later and later, and we got more and more “messed up” (☺), the games would get really awful. We still had lots of fun, though…

So he sets up the board then carries it around, and (as can clearly be seen in the first panel) isn’t bothering to hold it level? Won’t the pieces just slide off?

Chess sets can be great works of art, but Roger’s isn’t one
